I’ve been kicking it into high gear and getting a lot of things done that I’ve put off for too long. One, see a dermatologist about some acne on my back. He gave me a script for 3 months worth of tetracycline. I’m in at about day 10 of taking it. The other thing I’ve been doing is getting a lot of dental work done and now my teethsies are finally getting pretty enough to smile that I’ve got a concern now.
I’ve been reading about tetracycline stained teeth on the web and on threads like these. Most of what I’ve read is that the people took it as a kid and have discolored teeth because of it. I can’t seem to find anywhere that says that it can happen as an adult (and how long of taking it to see this side effect).
My dermatologist is had to get into (it takes two months before appointments are available). So I’m curious to know now.
“Other common antibiotics used to treat acne are tetracycline, minocycline, and doxycycline. Some people have side effects when taking these antibiotics, such as an increased tendency to sunburn, upset stomach, dizziness or lightheadedness, and changes in skin color. Tetracycline is not given to pregnant women, nor is it given to children under 8 years of age because it might discolor developing teeth. Tetracycline and minocycline may also decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills. Therefore, a backup or another form of birth control may be needed. Prolonged treatment with oral antibiotics may be necessary to achieve the desired results.”
