Tetracycline

I take generic Tetracycline for my acne. It makes me feel a bit weird sometimes, but today I had the absolute God-awful worst headache. I know this sounds weird, but the headache felt a little different-- like it was the result of the medicine.

On the onhealth.com website, it said “Discontinue use if you experience a severe headache.” Why does the Tetracycline cause a headache?

The obvious solution to this is to call your pharmacist and/or doctor and inform them of the problem.

You probably got a headache because your body had an adverse reaction to the medication. You could be allergic to it.

But please CALL A DOCTOR about it.

I have heard several young people I know tell me that (after going to the doc & asking for tetracycline for acne problems) nobody uses TC for acne any more. I tought there were newer & more specific medications that worked better now.

Tetracyclines as a class can cause increased pressure inside the skull (intracranial hypertension) because it can interfere with the balance between production of cerebrospinal fluid and the reabsorbtion of it, so that there is too much CSF trying to occupy a finite volume.

If this condition is present, a doctor can diagnose by examing your retinas and looking at the blood vessels there, and whether there is bulging at the point where the optic nerve attaches to the retina.

Stop taking the medicine, talk to your doctor & decide whether to try something else, or re-try the tetracycline & see if the headache reoccurs.

I had a girlfriend who was taking it for acne and it was meesing her up.

She was on the pill which seemed to cause the acne. The doctor gave her antibiotics which then caused vaginal yeast infections. The doctor gave something else for that…

I kept telling her to change doctors and stop messing with her body like that. I’d rather she have acne than mess with her health.

Anyway, at that time she visited a dermatologist who said there was anothor solution for acne, a one time thing, rather than antibiotics which you have to keep taking. Unfortunately I do not remember what it was. Maybe someone else will know this

Related- if you take Ortho Novum birth control pills, they can help control acne.

I never took tetracycline for mine, because I always got too much sun, and it can really make you burn.

I went on Accutane for three months. That’s some heavy stuff though. I needed to get on something strong because I was acting and modelling at the time and couldn’t afford to mess around. it’s not as dangerous as it was once considered as doctors know more about it now. Best of all, now that I’m off it I hardly ever have pimples. My friend who has serious cystic acne is now clear-skinned. It’s considered a “cure” for acne.

If your doctor is giving you Tetracycline for your Acne he sucks. Go to a different doctor.

I think it depends on the disease you have. I had to take a few months worth of Tetracycline for a skin problem (along with Retin-A and Clindamyacin topical). It’s still prescribed quite a bit, in fact. Newer doesn’t always mean better.

Chicken,
Stop taking the Tetracycline and contact your Dr. He or She will likely change your med. Either way, don’t take any more until you see the Doc.

Tetracycline is usually the first Rx they give you. Its cheap, its basic. Let your doctor know you want something else now. Whatever comes next is going to be more expensive & still have side effects.
