Tale of a Vietnam Hero Sniper

I just watched a show on the history channel about some historic sniper missions throughout history.

One of the tales was especially compelling but frustratingly unfinished. It was an account of a mission in the Mekong Delta. A group of soldiers had finished a patrol but were ambushed as they boarded a chopper for evac.

On the way out they noticed one man that they left behind and went back for him only the chopper crashed on the way back in. One lone sniper held off about 30 guys at night while a rescue chopper came to pick them up.

Everyone except one extremely wounded man got on the chopper to get out. The wounded man didn’t think he could make it so they left him with a grenade to take out as many enemy with him before he bought it. The thing is the hero sniper “wouldn’t let him die alone” so he elected to stay behind and hold off the enemy as long as he could (sacrificing himself in the process).

And that’s where the story ends. The thing is they have current-day interviews with both the sniper and the wounded man recounting the story for the show so we know they made it out somehow. They don’t however decide to tell us how the hell they made it out of the situation. The recreation literally ends with the sniper’s ammo winding down shooting at the viet kong closing in.

Does anyone know how this played out or can give me any info with which to look it up?

Do you have any names of the people involved?

Sadly no. I watched it on live tv so it didn’t record. The show was called “Sniper: Deadliest Missions” but the history channel website doesn’t give the details on the snipers involved.

This dude?

That’s him! Thanks DMC!
