Talisman

Talisman

I used to play it with my gaming buddies back in the day. We picked up the new version a few months ago and my wife and kids have been playing the hell out of it ever since.

It’s still totally crazy and random. You can be on top of the world, then roll poorly and wind up turned into a toad. My daughter insists on playing the Prophetess in every game and usually stomps us all. (Except last time when I played the Assassin and picked up the rune sword early on. I eventually had more lives than everyone else put together.)

Is anybody else a fan? What’s your favorite character? What’s the craziest thing you’ve even seen happen?

It was OK, but got a bit same-y after a while, and while the expansion packs added variety, they could also slow the game down a lot. The Prophetess’s power to avoid bad encounters was (is) almost game-breaking, though it’s possible for things to go wrong for her even so. Wizard with Wand was a tough combo as I recall though, going around stocked up with three spells all the time…

I liked the Monk, just because - and also because once he started getting the Strength and Craft going, he got really tough really fast. Holy Lance was one of the few weapons he could use, and he could almost make a hobby out of killing dragons once he had it.

No real memorable moments, though.

Loved it as a kid but lost interest once the futuristic elements started to creep in. We used to deal out three character cards face down to each player. You could then choose amongst the three. The Leprecahun could be fun and the warrior was simple to play. Wizard was always my favourite though.

I played a pretty good amount of Talisman back when I lived in the dorm. My favorite moment was a second turn warhorse for my fairy. The fairy is very weak but very smart with some decent abilities that make the character playable despite being made of tissue paper. The warhorse allows you to use your intelligence in fights, so my tissue paper character became the best fighter on the board and proceeded to destroy everything.

I developed a variation of the game which didn’t use the regular board. It used a bunch of random six-sided tiles which you would flip over and place to build a board as you were playing.

I love Talisman. I think I’ve played all of the old expansions. I have not had the chance to play the new version.
