Where’d you buy it? It’s not out of the realm of possibility that the Apple Store would refund the difference if there’s a major price change after next week’s announcement. Be sure to give them a call afterwards.
Slight hijack
Q: Can you use standard MP3 Headphones in the headphone jack of the Itouch? I’m only asking because my KOSS buds and my extrnal speakers fit the hole, but won’t play (The apple ear brutalizer buds that come with it play fine though).
Is there some Jobsian adapter needed to use these?
I’ve been using several brands of standard stereo mini-plugs and they all work fine (3rd G). Is it possible you’re not pushing the plug in far enough?
One thing I did notice, to my annoyance, is that the Scosche car remote receiver that fits into the 30 pin jack defeats the audio from the headphone jack. It works fine with my other iPod. 
Some earlier models of the iPod Touch and iPhone have a “recessed” jack (the plastic around them sticks out enough that the end of the input cable won’t fit flush if it widens out right after the metal prong). See if the prong goes in all the way. They corrected this somewhat in later models. I’ve had good luck just taking a hobby knife and trimming away some of the plastic at the base of the headphone cable I want to plug in.
