Talk me out of purchasing an iPod touch

Is there a better device? or a better bang for the buck? The iPod Touch is not cheap but from doing my research, this is the device that fits most of my criteria. It’d be nice though to have something that did everything the Touch does but:

  • Larger screen.
  • Have a real unlocked OS on it.
  • Have the ability to hook USB / HDMI / SD cards on it.
  • Decent battery life.

Any suggestions?

I’d wait a week and see what the rumor of Apple releasing a tablet computer turns out to be. Probably won’t help with your OS issue, but potentially could solve the other 3.

If it turns out to be a device similar to the Archos Internet Tablets I’d certainly consider it even if they go with the iPhone/iPod Touch OS model.

I’m leary about purchasing 1st gen technology but “we’ll see”.

Even if you don’t go with the tablet, it’s probably still a good idea to wait until it’s announced, since it might lead to a drop in the price of the iPod.

I am waiting for the drop in price, too. So, I have about a week to wait?

Moved Cafe Society --> IMHO.

Can do it, I love my iPod Touch. Go get one.

I can’t either; I gave my husband one for Christmas 2008, and he is deeply, madly in love with it. I did see one just like his on a used merchandise site this week for about half of what I paid for his, so maybe you could try that route.

I have a Touch, and I took it on vacation so I could watch movies on the train. And I tried to use it to surf the Web on the train, but, alas no wifi networks nearby. And I kept thinking, if this had been an iPhone, I’d be online now.

So my advice would be to get an iPhone instead. The Touch is good to watch movies on, though–once you get them converted to MP-whatevers. Which can take a while.

I’m torn between buying a Nano and buying a refurb Touch. To me the appeal of the Touch is that I could Google stuff when I’m away from a computer. Is that worth the extra $50 or $100? On the other hand, the Nano is smaller and less fragile.

I mentioned Archos, and I was looking at this model:

Archos 5 Internet Tablet

Features look sweet but the reviews are not very kind.

Hrmm… I just came accross this device which looks pretty sweet.

I’m solidly invested in iPod products (80gb classic and a 32gb touch), but whoo boy those Archos products sure look nice.

Sorry, really like my Touch. Works well for music, works well for internet access, you can put all sorts of cool apps on it, and walk around with a dozen useful reference books in your pocket. I’ve got a couple of astronomy applications and a couple of “what bird was that?” apps that I use a lot. And Scrabble has been occupying much of my free time (although the machine has a tremendous advantage in that it apparently has access to a dictionary of words that have been used maybe once in the history of the English language.)

Only downside is that the text can often be too small for these tired old eyes, but a swipe of the finger usually fixes that.

Sorry.

My husband bought one last week and I am absolutely amazed at what it can do. It is mostly in use as internet radio. It is also an e-reader, even if the screen is actually too small for that. And it is great for surfing the Dope in bed. But we also use it for our 20 month old son. See him use it here.
One of the zillion applications you can buy online for one or two bucks at the Apple store are “tippety tap books” where you get to see pictures of animals and when you tap them, you hear their sound.

Although an I phone has more uses when you leave your house and your own wireless network.

iPod touch is a great device, but I second the people saying to wait until you hear what Apple is announcing on the 27th.

I had an Archos 5, but it had so many quality issues that I had to return it. And considering that I spend so much time playing apps, which aren’t really available on the Archos, I would prefer the Touch even without Archos’ quality issues.

OH well snap, I went ahead and bought the darned iPod Touch.

I couldn’t wait until Apple unveils their newfangled device. We’re probably talking a 3 fold price range on that sucker anyways. True, it could probably lead to a Touch decrease in price but who knows how long that’s gonna take. Amazon has the 3rd gen 32gbs for $275 shipping included (Apple stores have them for $300 retail).

Cheers!

Yeah - the iPhone. It’s the touch with a cellphone crammed inside of it and can access the internet when not in contact with wifi.

Or better, given that you’re not eager to be locked into Apple, one of the android phones.

The reason I went with a touch instead of the phone is that I didn’t want to be stuck paying the $30 monthly extra fee to AT&T for the data plan. We do have cell phone service through AT&T now, and could have gotten deals on the iphone, but I couldn’t justify spending $60 extra a month for me and my husband to have iphones over touches. But, we live and work in places where wireless is available, so 90% of the time we have wireless access anyway. If that were not the case I might go with the phone.

I just have the 8gb touch and I couldn’t be happier with it. I use it to listen to music, sure, but I have tons of apps and also use it to check e-mail, text, keep a calendar, get news and my RSS feeds, and make shopping lists, money management, and games. I didn’t know it would be so functional, I bought one primarily to replace an old ipod and was so pleased when it also replaced my pocket pc and then some.

As an aside now that the OP has made the purchase, it is apparently possible (though I have not tried to do so myself) to use a few apps to place ‘phone calls’ from an iTouch (using VOIP iirc). This does not give the iTouch the full functionality of an iPhone, of course, but adds a rather useful (IMHO) function that might make the decision-of-purchase sway towards the iTouch for others.
