Just a few weeks ago, I learned to play Canasta, but only the classic rules. I’ve always enjoyed Rummy, so this is something I planned to do for years, but never got around to doing it. So far I’m only been able to play against a computer on one site. Now that I think I have a handle on the classic rules, I’m curious about a few things. Here are my questions if you’re willing to answer them.
Which version do you prefer to play?
Is that the usual version played in your country?
What are some good online sites, preferably free, to play against a computer?
What are some good online sites, preferably free, to play against humans?
What are your suggestions for playing well?
Also feel free to add other questions.
TIA to anyone who answers or even adds more questions.
Wow, I haven’t played canasta in ages. I remember I had some crappy freeware version that I messed around with. Reading the Wikipedia page has been fun. I had no idea there were so many national variations.
My parents are frequent canasta players (although their most common partner died off years ago). They play Hand and Foot, with the requirement of having 1 red canasta, 1 black canasta and 1 wild card canasta to go out. Also, when you pick up the pile you only get as many cards as match the value of the top card of the pile (e.g. if a 6 is on top of the pile, you can only pick up the top 6 cards). They also use some of the “miscellaneous variants” listed at the end of the Wikipedia article (e.g. “Card points inside canastas are counted as well as the canasta score”)
