How do I get on base? Do I need to wear my ninja suit? Or maybe Foxy and I can come up with some sort of classic con to fool the gate guard?
Yeah, but which of you is Lucy, and which is Ethel?
Okay, here’s the latest status report:
-
Tampa has status. This is one of the most delightful places I’ve ever been in. My first full day here (assuming I don’t drop dead before midnight) and I’ve had a blast.
-
checked out the USF campus this morning, then saw the MOSI exhibit.
-
On my friend’s recommendation (it turns out he lives very close to USF), I checked out Hyde Park. Not my dish of meat (too Williams-Sonoma-y for me) but I did get my friend a housegift at Williams-Sonoma, so that worked out fine, AND
-
the salesgirl at Williams-Sonoma, it turned out, par le plus bizarre des coincidences, saw my film on Long Island. This is like getting stuck by lightning, only it’s a good thing, in that my film has only been seen by about six hundred people, in four private showings (the fifth is scheduled for tomorrow) and I don’t talk about it usually to total strangers. Moreover, she (says she) liked it a lot.
-
I checked out a used book store at Kennedy Boulevard and Howard that had the best selection I’ve seen in my life in a bookstore of that size. Lovely place.
-
I went to Legends field, where I bought some Yankee paraphenila (to set up a great practical joke on some Mets-fans friends of mine)
-
and now I’m sitting in a Panera bread on Bruce B. Downs and Fowler using their totally free internet connection (my friend is internet-free, as opposed to free internet), having a lovely bowl of soup and sitting next to a totally gorgeous med student working on her laptop.
-
the only better thing that might happen now is that the totally gorgeous med student is a Doper and reading these words as I type.
-
Nope. Not yet, anyway.
I’ll keep checking, but even if she just keeps doing her pathology homework, it’s been a terrific day for me. Now that I know where to hook my laptop in to the net, I’ll check for messages from Tampa-area Dopers.
10 ) Nope, still not yet. Oh, I just realized I haven’t posted this yet. Duh!
By far the most selectively effective pickup line of the century:
“So baby, do you Dope[sup]TM[/sup]?”

The description of your day really makes me miss home. I love Tampa.
A lot to love.
The past two days, I’ve been exploring the botanic gardens at USF (right across the street from the Panera’s) and, though I’m the least likely person this side of Tom DeLay to indulge in meditation, I’ve been enjoying their lovely meditation garden.
Yesterday, I took a long walk along Bayshore drive, visited the museum of Contemporary Art at USF (where I learned that one of their exhibitors was a woman I used to know well in the 1970s when she lived quite near me in the south of France) and did some antiqueing and used-book shopping and general nosing around, all in the lovely 80 degree climate. I’m totally puzzled why people persist in living anywhere else.
Northeasterners are nuts.
