Tapping the top of the can.

For years, before I open a can of a carbonated beverage, I give the top a couple of sharp raps with my finger-tips. I’ve done it as long as I can remember.

When my girl asked me the other day why I do it, I just looked at her like a sheep staring at a semi. I had no clue.

I dredged my memory, and got something about the process helping to keep the soda from foaming out of the can.

After she stopped laughing, she was kind enough to tell me that was one of the dumbest things she had heard in years.

Does anyone else do this, and does my theory have any sort of basis in fact?

People tap on soda cans to avoid a soda explosion from a can that has been shaken up. Tapping may, in fact, decrease the likelihood of such an explosion, but a positive outcome is not guaranteed**
