Tasteless jokes in IMHO now merit "moderator notes"?

This response from Ellen Cherry seemed unnecessarily harsh and, what’s more the point, unnecessarily personal considering it’s official status as a moderator note.

I may well have a reputation on this board as a fool, and may in fact be a fool (because, I mean, if I am, how would I know?). I certainly seem to be a great many ignore lists. I don’t see, though, why someone needs to put their business hat on to tell me my wisecrack was unwelcome and unfunny.

It doesn’t appear to be a warning, and I’m not assuming it is, but it’s one thing when a police officer tells you to move along and it’s another when the officer unsnaps her sidearm while doing so.

I was trying to tell you not to threadshit. I did not mean to be overly personal.

Wouldn’t that be threadpee in this case?

More of a threadshart.

In the spirit of nailing it down, how about threadbarf?

Seemed like a harmless joke to me. How was is thread-whatever-ing?

Believe me, I resisted the temptation to say just this.

:stuck_out_tongue: Saying something tasteless in a thread discussing tampons and urination. Heh.

Yes. We prefer to keep our discussions about peeing around a vagina-wad strictly above board and classy, thankyouverymuch!

You should have given in to the dark side. According to a poster here, they have cookies.

Can you explain why you think it was threadshitting? KtK didn’t have anything negative to say about the OP, he was just commenting on how incovenient the subject of the OP must be.

Terrible call, Ellen.

It was kind of threadshitting.

Overzealous, IM[H]O.

Eh, perhaps I was a bit pouncy. But it’s tiresome for women, a class of people here at SD, to have to endure this sort of moaning and gagging from men when we discuss the monthlies. So perhaps possessing a V colored my decision to post a mild rebuke.

Thanks for the feedback, all.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a mild rebuke - but there wasn’t any reason to slap a mod hat on while doing so.

The old “my vagina made me do it” excuse.

You laugh, but one day you’ll find yourself caught in one’s grip.

Not necessarily a FUNNY thing!

Hm. I can’t see myself going, “Shut up, girlfriend!” without the mod hat. Certainly I posted some comments of this sort before I became a moderator, but somehow I think now I shouldn’t be critical at all unless it’s in a moderaterly capacity.

What do you think? How would you (all of you, not just Munch) interpret my remarks if they were rebuking but without the “Moderator Note?” KneadtoKnow? How about you?

ETA Darth, you made me snort. fans self

I don’t think this was a big deal. And I think it was the right call to ask/tell folks to knock off with the crude jokes.

However, I think mods should never insult posters when modding. Even in the slightest way. Okay, maybe when said posters argue back or insult the mod after the initial warning. And it should be crystal clear when they are modding or just being another snarky poster and whether this an official warning, or a mod note, and whether its an “okay guys tone it down a bit” or an “knock it all off now” sorta thing.

Ever had a person in power/authority insult you just because they could and you get the vibe you sure as hell better not mouth back? Kinda sucks doesnt it? Particularly where its a minor offense and a “knock it off please” would have sufficed?

Just sayin.
