Tasty recipes requiring no chewing?

I had a friend who basically had the same thing done before a vacation. She could eat just about everything the rest of us did except the steak we had one night. It just took her longer. I told her we had all the time in the world as long as it made her happy. She liked the baked potatos really well. Grilled hamburger patties were good too. A stir fry with tempeh or veggie crumbles could be a good way to get protein and I read that qinoa grain is a whole protein. (I am sure I mispelled that) And of course your normal vegatarian couples, grains and legumes make a whole protein.

Tomato soap, add crackers, wait until soft.

Cream cheese(with or without added flavorings) on soft potato bread without crusts.

Custards, puddings, souffles.

Salmon and other fish are flaky enough to be “gummed”. Broccoli florets, if steamed, should also be easy to eat with no teeth. Soba noodles or udon noodles also (I love them in chicken broth).

No help here with recipes, but try just about anything whizzed 'round in a blender.

I had gastric bypass surgery and was stuck for weeks in a “pureed” stage, with protein being a high priority. After weeks of protein shakes, sugar-free jello and pudding, the first time I had pureed chili I thought I’d died and gone to heaven. A little melted cheese on top can only help.

Canned hot dogs; some of the cheaper sorts can almost be eaten with a straw. Of course this is a reason for most people to despise them…

I was going to say roast eggplant. Cut in half, fill with diced tomatos, crumbled bacon, seasoning, roast in the oven…you can eat it with a spoon. And hummus would be a wonderful idea.

Also there are a lot of mashed possibilities, carrots, turnips, parsnips, rutabaga. They don’t HAVE to be bland. And you can up the protein with beef broth and such.

Another thought, could he manage baked beans?

Rissotto!

How about a nice shepards pie? Gound beef, mashed potatos, cheese and a few veggies baked to steamy goodness.

Not much of a meal but breakfast cereal in milk can get to a slightly soggy and easily gummed food stuff.

Beef Jerky?? No. Maybe not.

FOr a change from all the bland stuff, how about some dal? High protein, and as zingy as you want to make it.

How about a nice Keema curry with rice? http://www.route79.com/food/kheema.htm

Marylan-style crab cakes. The ones with lots of crab, little filler.

Lobster Thermidor, but dice the lobster meat up fine.

My shrimp creole recipe, but either dice up the shrimp or use a flaky fish instead. Here:

Spaghetti with meat sauce. Just make sure the hamburger is frequently stirred while browning it so there are no lumps. Then, use vermicelli and cook it a little past “al dente.” Or, maybe a lot past. Whatever works.

Best wishes for your friend. And good on you for caring so much.

:smack: Maryland dang it!!! Sorry.

Lipton Onion soup recipe MEAT LOAF. Delish.

Potato salad. As long as the potatos are cooked well enough, you can mash-and-crash it with your tongue against the roof of your mouth.

It’s nice because at least it has some texture, and you can even put very finely chopped onion in for “swallowable crunchiness”. Maybe be extra generous on the mayonnaise so it’s as smooth and lubricated as possible.

I don’t know how helpful this is going to be, but you might want to search out “Recipies for kids with braces when its hard to chew”. (When the wires on braces are tightened, it is painful to chew.)

I once read a website on such recipies back when I had my braces, Eons ago.
The recipies arent nescesarily kiddy just that a lot of kids get braces.

Like I said, perhaps not what your looking for… but worth a shot.

I’m trying to remember the last time I saw a recipe whose instructions stipulated chewing. Uusually people won’t eat food that someone else has chewed, but if you really are close friends, I suppose it would be OK.

lots of ground meat-based ideas: meatloaf, meatballs (made small and finished cooking in the spaghetti sauce), browned ground mixed into mac-and-cheese, meat cups (formed in muffin tins) baked with seasoned eggs inside the cup, sloppy joes without buns, chili without beans. more ideas

most large cans of mackeral and salmon have recipes for mackeral/salmon loaf. i’ve been meaning to try one out, just haven’t gotten there yet. a salmon mousse (normally more party appetizer fare, but fits the bill texture-wise) ought to be a good option. cream of crab soup? lobster bisque?

Western-style omelets, with fined diced cooked onion and mushrooms, and maybe real bacon bits that you let soak in the egg mixture for a while before you start cooking it, so they can soften up a bit. and don’t forget the pepperjack cheese. salsa optional.

crumbly-textured corn bread with apple-, pear-, pumpkin- or whatever is available-butter. for variety, add cheese and/or finely-chopped jalapenos to the cornbread.

well-shredded barbeque. “boiled” brisket, corned or not, can be shredded nicely too.
geez, gotta stop or i’ll be hungry all day now.

Any cooked legume can be pureed and seasoned. Damn good too.

Make instant pudding, and puree 1/2 cup of nuts into it. The nuts will dissolve, but the flavor is very good.

Hi all, I wanted to thank Rubystreak and everyone else for this thread. After next week I’m not going to be able to chew for about 6 weeks (dental, not gastric) so these suggestions are very helpful.

The most helpful suggestion, which should have been obvious to me, is the blender idea. I can eat just about anything if it goes in the blender first. I didn’t think of that. Duh. It may not look great, but it should taste the same (sorta). Blended chili, yum! Thanks kath94!

Several folks mentioned mashed potatoes, but let’s not forget gravy. Lots of protein, and no chewing. Also, there’s Stove Top Stuffing. If you make it with store-bought broth, it’s proteiny.
