Tattoos and you

Do you have any? If so, tell us where and what you have. Do you object to tattoos or find them offensive? If so, why? Do you believe in the stereotypes associated with tattoos or do you think they’re becoming socially acceptable?

I have four. And I completely love them. I’ll give details in a sec.

How safe is it to get one?
Does it hurt a lot?
(note: I can take pain fairly well, after having gotten enough novocaine shots to last me a lifetime)

I don’t have any, but I admit, I kind of want one… Just something on the arm, maybe something that wraps around my forearm…

But, the real reason I never seriously consider getting one, is the fact that it’s permanent… If I turn out not to really love the design, I’m stuck with it…
I don’t know if I can handle that kind of commitment
Post some pics of yours, Indy. I love looking at tat designs.

they are beyond just socially acceptable.

they are trendy

and the tribal shit on the base of a chick’s spine, is even more than trendy. it’s predictably boring.

I have a little horse-shoe on my hip. It’s no bigger than a quarter.

I have always really liked having it. But now I am thinking about getting it removed. For some reason I don’t want to have it when I have kids.

I probably won’t get it removed, though.

I think tattoos are cool too. But, like Phatlewt, I’ve never been able to come up with a design that I would want to look at FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE!

Also, doesn’t getting a tattoo keep you from donating blood, at least for a while?

I have both shoulders done with art nouveau vines patterns that wrap out to my collar bones.

Minor history: I’m an early-thirties architect, who’s going to be a dad in…oh…five weeks.

I planned mine really carefully, and have touched them up once. I keep them out of the sun. They’re solid colors, only black and red.

I guess I’m being really carefull with them so they’ll stay looking good, to hopefully avoid regretting them in thirty years.

I personally look at lots of people’s tattoos and wonder what they’ll think of them in a few years. I see lots of people who just abuse them (getting sunburn), and know that they’ll be reduced to green smudges later in life. There are definite styles that I don’t care for, but I’ll avoid mentioning that since it’s irrelevant.

I’ve always wanted to get a pair of dragons, each one covering a shoulder blade and turning to face each other like they’re fighting.

I think they’re kind of goofy, actually. Especially when someone’s got all kinds of different things all over them. I think it makes them look like the back of someone’s History notebook.

We’ve done this a few times before, but here we go…

I have a crescent moon on my right shoulder, and the numbers 24601 in my left hip.

I don’t particularly care what people think of them. Living in NJ, they are covered up 10 months of the year anyhow. I just got them because I like them.

I’ve got two, one on each arm. I wanted one for a long time but didn’t know what to get, then one day it hit me, that was 6 years ago and I haven’t regretted it yet.

MissBungle I did not get mine to be trendy, I got them for me and no other reason, I could care less if anyone else likes them or not.

vanilla they are safe if you goto a good shop. Make sure they show you the steralized needles etc. You can not give blood for one year, I don’t know why though because everytime I ask I get a different reason. As for the pain, it does and it doesn’t. It really depends on where you get it done at, as I understand it on muscles and over bone it’s supposed to hurt more then on fat. The last one I got on my right arm hurt more then the left, but it only took 1.5 hours or so, mostly because I just endured the pain and did it all in one sitting.

Yep, you can’t give blood for six months or so after.

My high school boyfriend got one tattoo, and soon got five more. He loved them. But I do wonder if I could make that kind of commitment: there’s nothing I can think of that I’d still want to have on me in fifty years.

I think they’re trendy, yes, but also pretty cool. Like piercings.

Edward the Head, I think a guy with nice thick calves with a tattoo on one is SEXAY. Super sexay, even.
I never said I hated them. I was simply answering one of the questions. Cool off, cowboy. I was just stating MY HUMBLE OPINION… I wasn’t atacking you.

Count me in for think they’re fine, but can’t think of anything (probably isn’t anything) I want tattooed on my body for the rest of my life.

I often wonder what it’s going to be like seeing old people covered in sagging, faded-to-blue tattoos of satanic screed here in about 20-30 years…

I have the Japanese kanji for Courage on my chest. I got it after I quit drinking.

I have a tattoo of Klingon script and the Klingon symbol on my calf. The script translates as the last three of the opening lines of Star Trek “To explore strange…no one has gone before”.

I’m in the process of designing another one right now, and will get it when I can afford it.

I have one tattoo so far. It’s a tribal dragon on my shoulderblade. I haven’t had it in the summer yet, but considering I already take care of my shoulders (I burn easier up there) it won’t be any hardship to make sure it’s covered/has lots of sunscreen on.

At one point I did consider getting a butterfly sitting on a hmm how to describe… it looks almost like a fancy at the top of an iron fence. You know with looks and stuff? Or kind of like vines… It would have been at the base of my spine. I eventually decided against that. Something I thank the gods for everytime I see some chick with her jeans low revealing thong and tattoo. shudder

I had decided I wanted a tattoo when I was 11. It was always in the back of my mind, but it took about 8 years for me to finally settle on one design. I’ve only changed my mind 3 times in those years, and as a second tattoo I am considering going for another design I really liked. When I have some extra money of course.

Dante, I like tattoos but the Klingon script is a bit dorky. I will nominate you as my Viceroy or perhaps my chief counselor in Dorkus Malorkus Mafialand. Props to you.

I have two armbands. One is a knotwork design on one arm. The other is a Greenman and a leafy vine armband. I like them both but the first one seems to lack something especially compared to the true artistry of the second one. I would trust the guy who did the greenman/vines, to doodle on me as a tattoo it turned out so well.

I don’t have any pics, but I’ll get some soon and post 'em. I have a tribal piece that is on the right side of my back, from my shoulder down to my waist. It’s really pretty unusual and I’ve gotten lots of compliments on it. It did hurt like a bitch on the lower part.

I also have a tribal armband on my left arm, a tribal around my right ankle, and a celtic knot on the back of my neck. All of my tats are done in dark black, with no extra colors. I believe that the way I’ve placed/designed them, that my tattoos are very tasteful and sexy.

I have 5.

2 Egyptian dogs, 2 Scythian stags and an archaeopteryx. All are black with shading. For some reason I’m hesitant to get colour.

Each design was pondered for at couple years before I went and made them permanant on my body. I find them very personal and they’re covered most of the time. (I’m paranoid about exposing them to the sun.) I was also picky as hell when I selected the artist. I’ll stick with her until she retires.

Do I want more? Hell yes. I have a few more designs in a file. Mainly paleo or archeologically based. I still take my time to make sure they’re suitable for life.

I think tattoos are socially acceptable, but then I 've lived in fairly open minded cities most of my adult life (Victoria, Vancouver).

I also have piercings, but they’re also hidden and personal.

Good call. It might have looked like you had vines growing out your butt…

My favorite idea that I’d like to see on a lady would be a tattoo of a snake wrapped around her hips, with the head and tail intertwined in front…
