Tax day is approaching: Do you have your taxes done?

eFiled about a week after I got my W2 in Jan. Recieved and spent my refund.

Loving my lasik.

Not only did I do mine yet, but when I started the other night, I realized that I’m short two 1099s. :smack:

(Transferred and closed a couple investment accounts last year and moved a few months later, obviously forgetting to update my address on the now-defunct accounts.)

/sigh

When I had done my preliminary tax estimate I realized that I had gotten a post-retirement bonus from my former employer last year. Since I had retired and moved in late 2006, the personnel office didn’t have my current address for the W-2 (the bonus had been direct-deposited into my credit union account, which I still had). So I had to contact them and request that they re-mail the W-2 to my current address. They told me that they needed a written (or faxed) request with my signature to do so, but the woman I spoke to looked up the info from it and gave it to me over the phone so I wouldn’t have to wait until I got the W-2 to do my calculations.

Yup, done, but since I have to pay Federal and State, I wait until the last minute to mail everything. No sense giving the goniffs money until it’s absolutely necessary.

Taxes are done, and it isn’t pretty. Let’s just say I owe more than several of you guys put together. Being self-employed is a bitch when it comes to taxes.

I’ve done my part. Which is to say, I took all my T4s and T5s and a couple of miscellaneous charity receipts and put them into an envelop and sent them to my mommy.

That’s right, my mommy does my taxes for me.
My mommy is a tax preparer at H&R Block. Your mommy may vary.

Bingo. Kid’s gotta qualify for the Child Tax Credit before they can get the stimulus payment.

I like to look at it this way: The IRS loaned me that money last year! At about 4% interest, too. You can’t beat that with a stick.

As if they were any less expensive after they turn 17. :stuck_out_tongue:

Mine have been done for ages. I do them as early as possible. I’ve been doing other people’s taxes for the past couple of months, and waiting around on relatives whose taxes I do to bring me one little paper for their state taxes so I can finish them.

I do mine in February. I already have all my refunds (the Federal about two weeks after I filed, but the state this week – New York always waits until April 1 to send out refunds so they can keep earning interest in the tax account).

I used to do mine immediately, but the last few I’ve grown lazy and put them off until late March.

I only do them that early because I want them out of the way, really. One less thing for me to think about.

I owe a rather large sum this year, so mine aren’t in yet. Why let them have it early? Besides, my accountant was busy. I’m signing and writing checks on Thursday.

Filed last week, and I’m getting a refund (thanks mostly to interest payment deductions) which I plan to use for hookers and blow. Or help pay for my upcoming wedding. One of those.

I just did it tonight! Small refund should be here soon.

Long since complete, will be packed up with a large check tomorrow for mailing on Monday.

I did my federal – getting back $2200 plus that stimulus crap. Woot woot. I’m a poor med-student living life on 7% interest, so obviously I’m going to blow this on stereo equipment, an electric guitar, cheap liquor, cocaine, and a hookers ass to snort it off of. Should be a fun summer!

*In case you didn’t realize, I was being sarcastic.

Did mine in Feb because I decided to buy a car and the amount of the refund was an important part of that. Now I have the refund, I know the make and model I want, I know the dealer I am working with, I know the price, I have the money, I am just waiting for the actual car to show up. Very frustrating.

Oh good, a chance to rant on taxes. Unlike all other civilized countries, the US makes its citizens file taxes world wide. All other major countries don’t make their citizens file income taxes when they live in another country.

We get a rather large deduction (about $84k) so many people don’t have to pay, then we can deduct part of our housing and get credit for foreign taxes, so more people don’t have to pay. Living in Japan, which has a higher tax rate than the US, means that most people I know don’t actually owe US taxes. Either they are under the $84k or if they’re over then they’re paying fairly high Japanese taxes, but it’s still a pain in the ass to file.

Higher earning US citizens in countries with lower income taxes will have to pay US income tax.

It’s stupid, my British friends here don’t have to file British income taxes, Japanese who live in the US don’t have to file Japanese taxes, why should we have to file or pay US taxes?

We have an extension on filing, but owe interest on any taxes not paid by April 15th.

Because they’re greedy bastards, TokyoPlayer. At least that’s my theory.
