Interesting tangent: one of the reasons Shirley Temple became so famous was that she was known as “One-take Temple.” She was a child with more professionalism than many of the adults she worked with, and directors loved her. She always delivered exactly what the directors asked for, the first time, and never flubbed a line.
She was the go-to when a kid was needed, and could handle lead roles that were beyond most children to learn. Audiences loved her, but they had to see her in the first place, and they saw a lot of her because she was so good.

In one episode (The Loobenfeld Decay), she’s rehearsing for a musical and she is obviously terrible. But in other episodes she can sing Soft Kitty … well, not great but not really terrible either.

The writers could make her as great or as terrible an actress as the bit requires.
