Yeah, I’m talking to you, Mrs. K.* You know, I used to feel sorry for you, what with all the kids making fun of you and stuff. I really did. But now, this is just the last straw. I’m so fucking tired of your whole class being afraid to ask you questions because of the way you yell at anyone who does. It’s not like you even answer the questions when you’re done yelling, anyway. I’m so fucking tired of you not being able to fully teach everything. I’m so fucking tired of you skipping teaching things entirely, then giving us graded assignments with these concepts. Do you have any idea how long I spent on that quest (quiz-test) you assigned to be due tomorrow? Hours. And I wouldn’t mind putting the time into it, if it actually was supposed to require that much time. But you know what? It isn’t. It only took so fucking long because I had to try and teach myself how to do everything. And why did I have to do this? Because you didn’t! This isn’t the first time this has happened, either. And I’m just plain tired of it.
Sad situation. Is this in high school? Perhaps you and the other students should speak with the principal about this. If the teacher is not doing her job, that’s something the principal should know. Or have your parents speak with the principal.
Or perhaps your parents should speak with that teacher first. If it isn’t resolved that way, then the next step would be to speak with the principal.
Yes, this is high school. And the principal and the teacher have been talked to countless times. This is one of those teachers that has been there forever, so they can’t get rid of her, yet hasn’t been there long enough to retire yet. I don’t know if she’s burned out or what, but she’s infamous at our school and there’s nothing anyone can do.
Nothing anyone can do? There are higher-ups than the principal isn’t there? Like the district Superintendent?
I think there are even higher-ups than that too. I wouldn’t put up that shit. If enough people are complaining I think they have to do something, at least make her take a mental health leave or something. Sheesh.
I’m from Virginia Beach too. Went to Princess Anne HS, and my bro went to Kellam. This teacher might be someone I know or have heard of.
And if you’ve talked to the principal and teacher countless times, and there’s no improvement, I’d say you might as well switch teachers. Most of the departments in VB at the schools coordinated their curriculums. It shouldn’t be that hard to find a teacher of the same subject on roughly the same schedule.
Drawing the ire of the teachers union frightens people more than pissing off a mobster. We’re talking about organizations that openly encourage the victimization of children when they want a dental plan.
Having had my share of run-ins with various and sundry members of our so-called “public service” sector from time to time, I get fed up with the lot. Right from the Prime Sniveler on down.
“Service”, my ass. Bunch of stinking, diseased, graft-sucking maggot-brained self-serving, pompous, whining, greedy, scabrous, parasitic, suppurating knob-gobbling syphilitic wankers.
What do you think, that the teacher is supposed to stuff learning into you? Sorry, you bear responsibility for teaching yourself, too.
Unless you’re in second or third grade, I suppose then you have a right to expect the teacher to fill your head with stuff… and you not have to work at it.
[hijack] Yes, how dare people want adquate medical and dental coverage. I have a better idea than attacking the unions. Attack the real problems: school boards and state legislatures.
An example: Here in Michigan, any profits from the state lottery are supposed to go to education. This totals millions, if not billions of dollars per year. This fund has been pillaged for general use for years, and no end is in sight. Luckily, teacher strikes are rare in this state, since there is (or maybe was) still quite a bit of funding available. If the legislators had not given themselves a raise either a year or two ago (from $50k/year to $75k/year, IIRC) that money could be used for education, among other things.
[/hijack]
Sorry about that, maybe I’ll start a new thread tomorrow, complete with cites.
Oh, and to the OP, as a teacher-in-training, your instructor’s behavior disgusts me. People like her have now place in an allegedly educational environment. I wish I could help you somehow, but I extend my sympathies to you.
Another slight hijack, but the current crop of teachers coming out (at least here at Western Michigan) seem to be much more compotent and friendly than even those that taught me a mere five years ago. I hope the system doesn’t corrupt them once they hit the real world.
The teacher’s role is to present the information, and to give the students ways to disseminate it. Consequently, testing people on stuff that was not taught does not seem to me to be properly fulfilling the teacher’s role.
Otherwise, heck with teachers. Hand the kids textbooks and let them get on with their lives.
C K, I have a question: Can you tell me what the role of the teacher is? Can you enlighten me as to why we pay thousands of adults thousands of dollars to come to school every day it is in session (and some days it is not)?
Please, enlighten the boards with the purpose of a teacher at the high school level.
Monica-- document what your teacher is, or isn’t doing. Make sure that she really, truly didn’t tell you to read chapter X and then gave you a test on it, for example. If it turns out that it isn’t a misunderstanding and she isn’t doing her part, present your info to your parents and let them have a talk with the teacher and/or principal. From there go to the superintendant, next step is the schoolboard. A note; sometimes it may seem as though nothing is happening but a lot of action goes on behind the scenes at a school. Too many of the same sort of complaints about a teacher will start some serious investigation.
Good teachers, and good teacher’s unions, don’t want bad teachers around any more than the rest of us.
Ugh. Reminds me of a junior-high teacher I had that did a unit on Japan. A guest speaker came in, and (among other things) told us that the proper spelling of kimono was “kimino.” About half of us were actually paying attention, and we wrote it down (especially because it seemed odd, but was coming from somebody in a Position of Authority). Needless to say, those of us who paid attention during the presentation LOST points on the test. When we explained to the teacher, she told us that we should have sounded it out. WTF? Lady, we know it’s a weird, non-phonetic spelling, but don’t you think it’s odd that all of your A and B students just came up with the same weird, non-phonetic spelling?
That sort of crap really shakes one’s faith in teachers. Sorry about your situation.
Please. Teachers are public service employees, not factory workers. People who go into public service do so with the full knowledge that they’re going to get paid shit because it comes from taxes. Further, they do so, presumably, because their cause is more important to them than money. When private unions go on strike, they cause an inconvenience for corporations and their customers. When teachers go on strike, they deny children their education, a fundamental right granted them by every state’s constitution.
Yeah, I feel sad that teachers don’t get paid enough. But I have no respect, indeed I completely loathe, teachers who would go so far as to actively turn away the people who they alledgedly want to help guide through life. In case I’m not being clear enough, they deliberately hurt children to get their way. Anyone who can possibly condone such action is a vile piece of shit, in my book.
Two words. Tape recorder. The little kind that fits in your pocket. Record the class. Ask questions and record her response. Ask her questions after class and record her response. Then make copies of the tape.
Send the tape and a letter to your local news channel and urge them to do story on the state of education in your area. They LOVE shit like that.
I had a stupid teacher my sixth grade year named Melton. In elementary (last year before Jr. High) a teacher taught all subjects. This was in a “private” day school.
One day she was teaching us about Russia (or the former USSR) and the city of Kiev came up. This stupid bitch pronounced it Keev (rhymes with Steve). I told her the correct pronunciation (Kee-ev) but dumbass insisted KEEV was right.
I’ve always wondered if this person ever ate Chicken Keev?
