Does anybody know of any good local resources for tech jobs around the Florida panhandle or Mobile?
I am a tech writer in Silicon Valley and I am seriously considering moving to Pensacola. At this point I can take my job with me, and telecommute from there long term. The idea of keeping my current salary, but living someplace where I can buy a house and still save half of my income is very appealing.
My fear is that if/when I become disenchanted with my job, that I wouldn’t be able to find anything locally, so I don’t want to make the move unless I know that there are industries available to work in within 100 miles.
I’ve checked the big jobs boards and found absolutely nothing. Is there anyplace else you guys can suggest that could be a useful resource?
The Computer Job Store shows 7 jobs for Mobile and only 1 for Pensacola. Dice shows 15 for Mobile and 3 for Pensacola. Not exactly a scientific study, but it does seem to show a bias towards Mobile in that industry.
A smaller area like that won’t have many tech jobs.
I think in Florida Tampa or Miami would be better bets if you want to be near the beach. Orlando is an option too. Cost of living in Orlando is pretty low.
The main tech centers in the SE are Atlanta and Raleigh/Durham (where I live) Of course these days jobs are not easy to find with lots of people cutting back.
Yeah, I was afraid of that. I want to move to Pensacola primarily to be closer to family. I was hoping that maybe there would be some kind civilian support for the military down there or something. My sister lives there now, but she’s a college professor and completely clueless about job markets outside academia.
