(Techie) Macs USWest & DSL

So I want to get broad band net access. I have a web presence that I would rather not move (and I like my ISP) so cable access (@home) is not for me…

USWest now has DSL in my area…they have 2 packages, MegaBit Select (have to dial in…and is slower) or MegaBit Deluxe (24/7 on).

I have a Mac, and so have to get the Deluxe package according to USWest…the bad news is I have to PURCHASE a Cisco 675 router at full price…runs about $300 bucks…ouch. This seems like a steep investment for a piece of equipment, considering that Im not sure how well DSL will work for me in my area…

Any other people in a similar boat…(even the prices on eBay are around $200?)…any other ideas/options

TIA

Hmmm… I can’t be sure for certain, but it sounds to me like USWest doesn’t understand Macs all that well. I was an early tester of Nortel’s DSL modem, and it made no difference hardware-wise whether I was using a Mac or a PC. Just needed the appropriate settings in TCP/IP, etc., and a working Ethernet card.

With some modem sharing software, I’m now sharing my roomie’s DSL connection on his PC, and again it didn’t take any extra hardware other than an ethernet hub connecting us together.

Reminds me of when Bell Atlantic insisted that the only Macs that could use DSL were iMacs because only they had the hardware address printed right on them. Whereas on other Macs, you’d actually have to go to the bother of opening up a control panel and looking! (horrors!)
