Technosphere! (or: Who ate Britney Spears?)

The carnage, dear God, the carnage!!

http://www.technosphere.org.uk/cgi-bin/map.exe?id=2478601

All of my poor herbies lived short and terror-filled lives, until Eyeball Salad managed to hang on and start breeding like mad.

Meanwhile, an otherwise unremarkable carnivore of mine managed to kill Stupidity . Way to go little guy!

CecilAdams is my oldest surviving critter.

Tranq Pinky was one of mine as well and has died since your encounter with her, if it’s any consolation.

Have ya’ll noticed that the critters both impregnate and become pregnant? Here is an example, I deleted out most of the events for space, but if you go and look you’ll see there’s been a bit of incest.

More later as things develop…

Technosphere! I remember technosphere. I created a herbivore named FredPhelps. He and all his progeny were horribly killed and eaten.

Heh heh heh.

Awwww man, now I only have 11 Hawaii_SDMB_I left, out of 100 born.

Yet my 6th generation is going strong and be forewarned ye hunters, they kill more then they are killed! Well not yet but they will very very soon.

Kentucky: 31
Hawaii: 6
Michigan: 3
Georgia: 22
Florida: 5
Maryland: 36
Connecticut: 11
Massachusetts: 8

And they all come from one ancestor each.

Check out this guy
What a boring life!

Hmm, a life of food and sex. I fail to see the problem, except perhaps in the ratio.

Ok, I think my creatures are sounding pretty weak and pathetic so now I must point out the toughness of my faithful followers so I’ll give a run-down on which SDMBers they’ve killed.

Kentucky_SDMB_V (id 2048509) killed Atreyu_SDMB
Kentucky_SDMB_V thwarted g-d_of_SDMB attempt to kill him.
Kentucky_SDMB_V beat up Fermium_SDMBI
Maryland_SDMB_V even defeated my own carnivore Osiris_SDMB_I

Not bad eh?

It seems my carnies aren’t quite as adept as their herbie brethren, except for this guy who’s already killed 6! And this guy* who killed Hide_SDMB. Bwahahahaha. I made him in my own image.

Although he’s kinda sick, he mated with 2 of his siblings!

Obesrvation 1: I wonder what other users of the site think of all these SDMB creatures showing up? DO they think they’re all by the same person?

Observation 2: Have you noticed all the different creatures named Clone? Shortly after Sept. 11 they shut down the system to remove offending names for several days and presumably are still filtering names. I wonder if Clone is the generic name they give to all those creatures?

Toast_SDMB and Deelicious_SDMB are mine. Toast has moved on to the Great Toast Rack in the Sky, but Deelicious is still kicking. There are two Toast Jrs running around too.

Thanks AndrewL, that was my Stupidity that you killed.

But, I think that we are even now - I thought that one of my critters killed one of yours.

I’ve had two interesting interactions:

From ParkwaySDMB’s events (id 2490468):
(1) 10.2115: Killed StraDoMeBo (id 2396591) in self defense
(1) 10.2115: Caught by StraDoMeBo (id 2396591)
(1) 10.2097: Being hunted by StraDoMeBo (id 2396591)
From F’norSDMB’s events (id 2490474)
(1) 10.1930: Mated with BosdaIIIII (id 2362765) but conception did not take place

Of course, he’s not necessarily our Bosda, but StraDoMeBo has got to be an SDer.

Osiris, considering that there are already a number of wg creatures (from the Where’s George site, I’ll presume), I’m sure we’re not the first group to invade technosphere.

It seems to me that the blue turtles (Sting reference!) are far and away the most successful herbie type, and the red “rotini” bodies are pretty much useless, no matter whether they be carnie or herbie. A_Nutjob_SDMB is about the most incompetant carnie I’ve had, and he’s a “rotini” carnie. All my other carnies either kill or are killed, but ol’ Nutjob can’t seem to do either correctly.

The purple snake and yellow crowbar bodies seem to be the best for carnies, and the long alligator-type jaws seem to be the best for killing, although the spikey “hair comb” teeth run a close second.

Oh, and this morning, I can’t hit Technosphere at all.

CecilAdams

I believe size is important. Furro’s first pregnancy seemed to take forever. (Actually it was 0.349 years). Then there was a period of wild promiscuity in which no conception took place. By the time of its second pregnancy, it was rather large, and that one took only 0.0128 years. And the most recent one took only one event cycle (0.0039 years)!

And by the way, whatever an MS is, Furro is now 4.01 of them. Grow, my creature, grow!

MS==Meter Squared?

Could be, I guess. But for a 3-D simulation, you’d really need meters cubed.

Actually, my theory is it’s probably just meters, referring to length, and they got the abbreviation wrong. But who knows? It could be something they made up. Morph Spheres?

I also used to think that “rotini”-shaped carnivores were useless, but I checked the few that I have and all but one have killed. A couple have killed more than 5 each. I have several of the green bodied ones that are older and have yet to kill. I think that the rotinis grow faster than some of the other body types.

Does anyone have a guess as to what happened to all the carnies? When we first invaded, there were more than 30,000 carnies in the techosphere, now it is down to around 23,000.

Ferrous, I was thinking more along the lines of ground covered, rather than volume.

Robb, my fastest growing canie is a blue turtle, and the next fastest is a purple snake. The green potatoes seem to grow slowly, and all my yellow crowbars were wasted quickly. Nutjob has finally started killing, but he’s relying on eating baby herbies, as anytime he faces up to a ~1MS-sized harbie, he gets his tail beat. He’s my fourth oldest carnie, and is still only 1.19MS. I guess there’s much more here than meets the eye.

As for the umbers of carines, well Technosphere returned the same date for me for about 10 days, and when it cam back, the large herds started breaking up, and some other behaviors seemed to change, too. Did Technosphere make some changes, delete some carnies?

Either that, or the herbies are doing better defending themselves.

Have we learned enough about this to start hypothesizing about what makes a good carnivore? Can we propose an experiment?

I’m beginning to think that the secret to success is getting to the middle. In there, herbies have the protection of a flock and the few carnies that make it in can eat till they burst.

Hmmm, good carnies…

Well, I’ve had good luck with blue turtles and purple snakes. Green potatoes have been so-so, the red rotini have fared rather poorly, and all my yellow crowbars got off’d right away. That said, the carnies that show up most often in the Top Creatures poll are either crowbars or snakes.

Alligator jaws seem to be most effective, with the hair-comb jaws coming along next. In my experience, the single eyes seem to work well.

Dunno about wheels, though.

Any other thoughts?

I think spike wheels move faster.
