Ted Cruz Presidential campaign discussion thread

No, i just think that all officeholders should have sole loyalty to the United States.

It’s like a Pace commercial for politics. “New York CITY!”

If Cruz ever tries to pull the move that he’s the best candidate to bring this country together, I hope the press is smart enough to pull that clip of him talking about New York City.

Ted really walked into it with the “NY values” thing. And he’s getting whomped for it from every direction. Good.

You can’t presume that because The Don gets away with saying crap now EVERYONE can. Besides Trump’s supporters KNOW he’s all about NYC-brash “I do things my way, ya gotta problem with that?” Which is really the most *admired *“NY value”… They are not looking for a pious theocrat.

Oh sure I get it that the line about “just saying, not many conservatives come from NY” was an attempt to flip Hairboy’s comment about not many Evangelicals coming from Cuba, but Cruz should have said that right THEN, not waited until everyone forgot about it.

This isn’t exactly new. San Francisco was a target for decades. (Might still be, for all I know.) Hippies, liberals (and especially liberal college professors) coming out the wazoo, New Agers (who must be Old Agers by now, but I digress), gays, transvestites, etc. - that’s what conservatives see when they think about San Francisco.

Well, and saying that when Buckley is from there is pretty dumb.

God, that exchange in the debate made Cruz look so oily. Of course, I’m completely biased because I really find him creepy no matter what he does.

I live a few blocks from the Castro, so that’s what I see too! But, I guess I view it through a different lens.

Not that many hippies anymore. If conservatives want to hold up a liberal city bogey-man, SF works very well. Berkeley would be better, but SF has more cachet.

As Fiveyearlurker says, it’s really a matter of perspective whether that’s good or bad.

Citizenship conferred by accident of birth really doesn’t say anything about loyalty. It’s not as though Canada is going to call Cruz up for national service.

How does sole citizenship = sole loyalty?

Aldrich Ames, e.g., was a U.S. citizen by birth and possessed no other citizenships; that didn’t stop him from becoming a Soviet spy. Vidkun Quisling held no other citizenship than that of Norway; his name remains synonymous with traitors and collaborators.

The points can be on the negative column though:

And with the Statue of Liberty giving him the finger.

Surfing the ‘Tubes, the consensus seems to be that in last night’s debate, Trump gave his best performance yet. The way he played the 9/11 card against Cruz’ disparagement of NYC culture was genius.

Also, everyone perceives Cruz has finally given up on conciliation and decided to attack Trump head-to-head. Before this, he held back in hopes of eventually inheriting Trump’s base (and vice-versa).

The New York Daily News seems to embody NY city values pretty well. Subtle, reserved, and understated.

Cruz’s mistake was settling on a specific city. The correct attack line would be “east coast liberal elite” because nobody’s going to think “Hey, he’s talking about me!”. Going after NY specifically gave all New Yorkers free reign to fight back

Cruz’s body language seems to indicate that he thought Donald got him back good, but I think it’s an open question as to whether that really did hurt him, since in most parts of the country potential Cruz voters are not pro-NYC to say the least. I think the New York media may be giving Donald too many points on that one.

And Trump really should have taken the line I suggested, making Cruz explain the distinction between 18 and 19 year old American mothers.

Nitpick: “free rein.”

I almost made the same nitpick, but I think the language has evolved on that one.

Buckley was born there, but grew up in Mexico and Connecticut. And his father was a Texas oilman.

Yeah, because the guy who went to Princeton and Harvard would be above all that east coast liberal elite stuff.
