That was a completely unexpected twist about Coach Beardface.
Unexpected, but not surprising. The guy’s a lunatic. A lovable lunatic, but a lunatic nonetheless.
I don’t think there was any smearing. If you’re referring to Trent saying he heard rumors of inappropriate workplace behavior at West Ham, that could very well apply to Rupert himself screwing around with his assistant Ms. Kakes, which Nate pretty much knew about. And when Ted was reading a news article about Nate leaving, nothing in it suggested any indiscretion, it was mostly just “did Nate quit or was he fired and why?”
So there was no abuse to quietly accept.
Or maybe before.
Also, why is he still living in corporate housing after 3 years?
He said he “stole a loaf of crack”. How much of that story is bullshit?
There were a couple of weird shots of his apartment in this ep, with stairs in the background through an open door. The first time, I asked my wife if his apartment had an upstairs and, if so, wouldn’t there be an extra bedroom up there. The second time, it looked like he came in his front door and just didn’t close it - which seemed odd.
I think they also had a couple of shots that impressed me as mildly odd, of someone (Ted or Nate?) exiting their apartment, where the camera filmed them from the side and the camera moved through what would have been a gap in the wall, to continuously film the character going out through their front door. (Sorry I don’t know how to explain it better.) Not sure why I was focussed on front doors and apartment floor plans…
He was making an allusion to Les Mis. Jean Valjean stole a loaf of bread. I’m sure Beard was caught dealing meth or using meth. But to complete the analogy, he just says “I stole a loaf of meth.” It wasn’t meant to be taken literally.
Ah thanks. That makes complete sense since there was a Le Mis reference earlier. I’m not familiar with the work.
In the musical (and presumably the original book), Jean Valjean (the main character) is given shelter by the bishop for the night, only to abscond with the silverware. He is captured by the police, who bring him back to the bishop’s resaidence. But the bishop tells the police that he had given the silver voluntarily to Valjean. Similarly, when Beard stole Lasso’s car, Lasso told the police that Beard had his permission.
I find myself far less interested in this season that one’s past. I wonder if it’s because all the storyline are being wrapped up in nice little bows way too easily. Nate went from prick who turned on Richmond family to almost immediately feeling regret and wanting to make amends (what was it like 3 eps?). And then the team voted to unanimously bring him back? And then you have Keeley who basically seems to take Roy back even though he broke up with her for shitty reasons he doesn’t have to deal with…
I know, Ted Lasso since season 1 has been about forgiveness should be freely given, not earned (see how quick Ted forgave Rebecca), but it’s really strange.
It doesn’t seem that way to me at all.
I don’t get to do this often, but Ted’s mom has the worst Kansas accent I’ve ever heard.
Nate comes off like the prick we expect him to be when we see him in the first few scenes of the first episode of this season, but I think from there on out, we’re pretty consistently shown that, at least underneath it all, he’s still the same old Nate. He is frequently awkward with others and stammering. He opens his first press conference as West Ham coach by inadvertently quoting the lyrics to Getting To Know You.
He has to do his spitting thing to get into Prick Nate mode where he then insults Ted and Richmond during the interview, but I think that’s a reflection of the scene with Rupert towing away Nate’s Mini and replacing it with an Aston Martin. They both show Nate trying to change into something he’s not. He can drive an Aston Martin, but that’s not him; he can do the spitting Prick Nate thing, but that’s not him. He always comes back to being the awkward stammering guy.
And then we’re shown by watching the security cam video in its entirety that even during the tearing up of the Believe sign moment — what should be emblematic of the lowest Prick Nate moment — he immediately reverted to normal awkward Nate, hiding under the table, getting himself locked in, and having to flop out the window.
Also, within the show, months have elapsed since he quit in a huff, joined Rupert at West Ham, managed the team successfully, and then quit on his own. So it’s not as if this was an overnight shift.
Right, it’s a full year since Nate left - it was the final game of last season, and there’s one game left this season.
It does seem like a few more small scenes regarding Nate would’ve been helpful. Unless I’m not remembering, we haven’t seen any of the players discussing Nate at all since the match where they watched the tape at halftime. So if I take some time to think about it, I can justify that it’s been months since then, and since Will was with Colin and Isaac at the restaurant, they must’ve been discussing Nate’s apology to WIll, and so on. But in the moment watching the show, it was jarring to see them just show up to see Nate.
I don’t mind Nate’s overall storyline this season, but it’s been disconnected from the Richmond team. We’ve seen Nate wanting to apologize to Ted in the elevator. We know why he left West Ham, and we know about his relationship with his father, but the Richmond characters don’t.
Ignorant American questions…
So you win the league by having the best record of all of the teams in the league. Since they are in the top league, there isn’t anywhere better to go next year. Is there some kind of playoffs with other top leagues or is this it? I imagine that most years it doesn’t come down to the final game for league champion so the last game isn’t a big deal (unlike this year). Correct?
They move up to the Double Secret League.
I thought there was a really neat moment where Nate was watching the game on the TV at Taste of Athens. Nate is mumbling a play-by-play to himself, and we hear him say “Colin is open”. There is a pass from Jamie to Bumbercatch (?), who passes up to Colin, who heads it in. Announcers marvel at how Jamie is thinking several passes ahead than anyone else - and we saw that Nate is as well.
And of course, the running joke with Keely on the hotel television channel is always fun.
