Maybe a test that tests how informed you are? Like, if you have no clue as to who you’re voting for or what the issues even are, you can’t vote? That doesn’t discriminate, it simply makes sure people know what they’re doing. (And accidentally voting for Buchanan could have happened to everyone- being the ditz that I am, I totally could have seen myself doing it. :))
Haha, and no, I’m not being sarcastic with this post.
Guin, I understand there are some excellent medications available to help smooth out the ‘rough spots’; perhaps if you ask the staff nicely they might oblige. One thing though, do they know you are on the internet unsupervised?? Be careful, I wouldn’t want your privileges to be taken away or anything. I wish you luck,
Nice way to malign Guin while also slamming anyone on medication.
Now… why don’t you tell us where you get the rest of your idology from as you seem to have stolen your concept of voting rights from Starship Troopers.
Tedster, if the best you can do to defend your statements is to make snide remarks about the person criticizing your statement instead of trying to rebut the argument directly, then you seem to be admitting that there is no defense for your remarks.
In other words, you’ve just confessed to being an idiot.
But personally, based on your first response to Guinastasia, I would say that you’re a moronic asshole of the first water who wouldn’t know how to tell the difference between an ad hominem fallacy and the bunghole from which you apparently speak out of.
My mother, while not the most technologically adept person I know, is quite a clever person in her own diabolical way. Here’s a statement I took from her back in 2000 and posted directly to the SDMB:
Heh, heh. That’s my Mom, all right. And yes, she lives in Palm Beach. She’s not a crank head, nor is she on welfare, nor is she illiterate.
I can’t/won’t outright defend the remarks, but have thrown my hands up made similar utterances in the past.
In calling for a
“poll tax or limiting voters to…property holders, taxpayers, veterans of military service…”
it’s possible his frustration with the “system” was the reason they were written. For all I know, Ted loves this country as much as the next person (he’s at least involved enough to post his opinions on a message board). Could he be looking out on the horizon and be seeing a very bleek future for this nation or this planet? Maybe he’s worried about the prospect of: [ul][li]Taxpayers having ever increasing amounts of their wealth taken from them by confiscatory taxes enacted by legislators who are influenced more and more by the “non-contributors” in society. The day the “wanters” outnumber the “havers” is when the trouble really starts. Or []The imminent collapse of medicare and social security; a ponzi-scheme that will fall under its’ own weight as longer-living recipients demand more and more benefits while resisting any reform. Or []The continuing flow of illegal immigrants, unlawfully arriving in our country and receiving similar “safety net” benefits as citizens. Or A nation that continues to transform into a balkanized mosaic as opposed to a melting pot with similar values and a common language.[/ul] [/li]There may even be a reason as to why he chose not to defend (or rationalize) his points and instead, opted for an insult. He was called to the pit, called a shithead, a jackass, a dickweed, ridiculous, stupid, an idiot and a moronic asshole. There’s some ranting, but nothing of substance I see that proves any of the enumerated adjectives. He’s as entitled to his express his opinion as a (non-property owning, welfare-receiving) citizen has to vote. (I’ll lay 5 to 1 odds at least one poster toyed with the idea of metaphorically comparing him to Tim McVeigh)
Maybe he realizes the members of the “higher-thinking” crowd who can’t believe he actually wrote something that ignorant already have their minds made up and it isn’t worth the time or effort to rebuff them or elaborate any his statements. We’ll all be better off when just shouting someone down is a tactic that no longer is as effective as it used to be.
Is Tim close minded? I don’t know. But maybe whenever he sees or hears the “fighting ignorance” mantra he grins to himself with the knowledge there’s plenty or ignorance (mixed with a good dose of bliss) on both sides of just about every argument.
I’m stuck at work with nothing to do at the moment, so figured I’d take a minute and post a pit hypothesis. Disclaimer: I carefully refrained from interjecting any of my own opinions. I never met Ted, nor do I remember ever reading any of his prior posts. It is for that reason I request no one refers to me as a fuckwad in any future posts…I’m way too thin skinned and take insults to heart.
Except, of course, that the commentary was pretty darned restrained and addressed almost exclusively at the stupid idea he posted . . . until the poster in question showed up and took a ridiculously cheap, content-free shot at the OP. Now he’s just a dickwad.
