I vote Vegas because I’m a poor college student and I would actually be able to afford a wee trip there. I’d love to go to Chicago or Somewhere in Canada, but unless SiC happens to be Vancouver, I really can’t afford it. ::sighs:: Are there any SD Travel Scholarships? How about a couple simultaneous conventions?

“You couldn’t fool your mother on the foolingest day of your life if you had an electrified fooling machine.”
I’m renewing this discussion. I think Chicago because its centrally located-three hours from almost anywhere in the continental US. Also, SD HQ. Besides, Chicago is a great town.
I still say Chicago. It just doesn’t make any sense to have it anywhere else. So, Vegas has all these fabulous diversions…I don’t wanna diverted, dammit. I’m “cultishly addicted” to y’all, and I’d be just as happy pulling up a square of carpet at Valerie’s place in Chicago.
I vote for Chicago (since it would be easiest for me…I live just outside of it). My next two votes, in order, would be St. Louis, then Memphis. But, if I’m driving far (or flying) it depends on when it is.
If I were going to go to it, I’d pick Vegas because that’s so close to where I am. I’m afraid if I made a trip to St. Louis, I’d stay there, as I grew up there and am kind of nostalgic for it.
Diane: things must have changed a LOT since I was there 2 years ago, then. When I was in Vegas, our hotel was over $100/night, it cost almost $9/person just for BREAKFAST, and ALL the entertainment cost money (except sitting around in bars or watching fountains)
Also, the climate is just miserable. It’s so hot all the time you’re exhausted just from being outside for 3 minutes.
It’s also WAY WAY west of being a central location.
I’d vote for just about anywhere that is somewhat central and not too expensive. I’d also vote for DC, because it’s cool and really close to me.
I’m with Kyla. I vote for closest for me, due to the travel $ problem.
Montreal is an amazingly beautiful city. The canadian dollar’s exchange rate is fantastic. There’s a ton to do and see, and we can laugh at the French-Canadians who think they’re French. (sorry, Quebecquois)
As a secondary vote, I vote for DC. My rockin’ 85 year old great Aunt is down there.
And I similarliy vote for sometime during July 4th week, as I have that week off.
A little persistance goes a long way. Announcing:
“I go on guilt trips a couple of time a year. Mom books them for me.” A custom made Wally .sig!
The only way this is going to happen is if one or more people take on the responsibility of coordinating the convention. Then, the coordinator chooses where the party is held.
Any volunteers? We have people wanting to go to DC, St. Louis, and Vegas, also Chicago. I’m game for anywhere, but if I did the coordinating, it would be held in Grapevine!
Plus we need ideas on what we want to be doing. So far all the IRL meetings have been in bars or restaurants. Do we want to have any special outings? Hey - if we had it in DC, we could descend en masse on the Smithsonian!
I do not merely dance. I bewitch. I seduce. I enchant and I bewilder. Throw money.
(Gee, Wally must have seen me dance!)
The GQ thread was moved to MPISMS(see SDMB Convention). The new software currently removes a thread from the originating board when it is transferred, per ManhattanMOD.
SingleDad, talk to beatle as he has done a mini-convention in Houston before.
There’s no way to hold a convention without making it a commercial enterprise. We can’t make it a commercial enterprise without at least the permission of the Chicago Reader to use the trademarked “Straight Dope” name for the convention and to use the SDMB for the purposes of promoting a commercial enterprise.
If a convention is going to happen, the CR needs to take the next step and and either coordinate the convention in-house or lend its official Col. Sherman Potter Okey-Dokey to a coordination team from among the Teeming Millions.
Personally, I’d rather travel to Chicago, Vegas, L.A., etc. than accept the monumental task of organizing a convention, but I will serve if called.
I’ll be in Vegas next week again. My reservations made over the internet are $39.00 and $45.00 per night (depending on the night) at Excaliber but you can find cheaper rooms in the older, but still nice, casinos. The best deals are through the internet.
In addition to the information I posted in the begining of this thread, I will check out a few more prices while I am there if anyone is interested.
The last time I was there, last November, I spent a total of $200.00 in three days, including my share of our hotel room (I went with friends). I didn’t gamble at all.
It really is a fun place and pretty cheap if you know your way around.
