Teen Getting Nose Surgory

5-6K is a lot of money. Would you rather have a nose job than a summer backpacking through Europe or whatever it is that would float your boat? Will you get more enjoyment out of a nose job than you would from any other use of that money that you could talk your parents into?

I like noses with humps! I find them sexy.

Anyway, I think Broomstick is right on, You should certainly wait a bit. A nose that looks big or ungainly on a teenager might look great on a man.

But if you do decide to get it done, make sure that you maintain the basic character of the nose. IMHO, Paula Jones got a good nose-job. It’s still long and prominent, because that’s what fits her face, but it’s not huge and lumpy like it used to be. I knew a few people growing up who “looked Jewish”–they had very Semitic faces with big noses. They got little Irish ski-jump noses, and they looked amazingly bad. One look at them, and you thought “nosejob!”

I personally LOVE big noses. My hubby has one and he never liked it, but I do. He even asked me once if I thought he should get a nose job and I told him emphatically NO! There are plenty of girls out there who love a big nose.

When I was 14, my nose was broken by a softball and I had to have rhinoplasty to fix it. My doctor and parents were VERY concerned about doing the surgery at such a young age, since I was probably still growing (never got any taller, though!). But the accident with the softball had basically obliterated my nose–smashed it to little bitty pieces–and I looked like a complete freak with no nose, so they fixed it with the caution that I might have to come back when I was 20 or so to fix anything that went wonky while I was still growing. It was a six hour operation because the surgeon basically was putting all the little peices of my nose back together like a puzzle. Luckily, it turned out fine and I did not require another surgery…

…Until I was 25 and a drunk guy punched me in the nose at a bar. (He was aiming for the guy next to me and when I heard the commotion and turned around, WHAMMO!) Broke it again and I had to have a second rhinoplasty. The surgeon commented that I had TONS of “scar tissue” and it was very difficult to fix. I don’t think it looks as nice anymore as it did before the second break. Oh well.

The surgery when I was 14 seemed a lot less painful than the one when I was 25 (but maybe I just don’t remember it as well). Both times I had to sleep sitting up for about a week, and after the first surgery, I was not allowed to run for six months, and not allowed to play any sports of any kind for an entire year. (they didn’t want stuff jostling around since I was still growing.) That part sucked.

Anyhoo…after all that, my vote is you wait until you’re 20 before you decide. Or at least sit down with a surgeon and discuss it in detail. Feel free to ask me anything you’d like about the procedure(s) themselves and I will gladly share my experience.
