Teen Pleads Guilty in 'Mortal Kombat' Death, I call bullshit

Ok, here’s the link Mortal Kombat Death

I’m sorry, but to pin this on a video game is just batshit crazy. This game had no more to do with this poor childs killing than Tom and Jerry was responsible for the Comumbine slayings. When people hype up shit like this it just makes me fucking nuts. I’d bet dollars to doughnuts that this kids lawyer originally told him to go with the “video game defense” to try to get out of some time and possibly be able to sue the company that made the game. It’s just insane. I remember a lot of cartoons from when I was a kid being FILLED with fucking violence, and we dont’ have a whole crap load of people in jail for emulating Tom and Jerry, or TMNT, or jeebus crist power rangers for that matter. Video games don’t make kids violent, period. Bitching about how it makes kids violent, and undermining their ability to be able to tell the difference between video games and real life makes them violent.

For the record, I feel very bad for this little girl and her family, she should have not died at all. But these were just a couple fo really fucked up kids to begin with, Mortal Kombat didn’t have a fucking thing to do with it.

(and this is my first pit thread I believe, might be the second, and I apologize if this topic has been done before, it just really got under my skin)

Unless I am understanding the story wrong, no one is blaming the video game itself, but saying the defendant in question, while mimicking the moves in Mortal Kombat, caused the tragedy to occur. Something similar to this occurred in New York a few years ago if memory serves

Yeah, but we’re talking about a 15-year-old game. I don’t buy for a second that they were in fact mimicking it. Maybe if they had referenced something remotely contemporary, but as-is this feels like someone saying that they went out and shot up a school because they were mimicking Doom.

Sure, slimy defense tactic to deflect sentencing. I still don’t think anyone is blaming the video game itself. Unless I am mis-reading the OP’s rage.

Still, he probably shouldn’t have froze her, dragged her over to him with the hook in his sleeve, and then ripped out her heart with his bare hands and shouted “fatality”.

Dude, imitation is the sincerest form of blame

I bought my boyfriend a Mortal Kombat game for his PS2 - it was a newer one that combined all or most of the characters from the previous games and you fought on a somewhat more 3D plane. Mortal Kombat: Armageddon - Wikipedia Came out in like 2006. And a brand new one - DC characters versus Mortal Kombat characters was released last month. So no unless the kid only ever had a Sega or whatever platform the original came out on, it’s probably not talking about a 15 year old game.

And children do tend to be affected by violent media, especially when bad consequences for the violent acts (like getting in trouble, sadness over victims etc) are not shown. If the kid was fifteen, he’s probably too old to be as affected in this way because he should already know the consequences without having to be shown, probably he was just desensitized but most people are and they don’t kill people. So either this kid is stupid or has some issues we don’t know about.

I agree. A Babality would have been bad enough, seeing as how they’re teenagers.

Fox News:batshit crazy::water:wet

Ok, maybe I read a little too much into it. Maybe they were only mimicking moves from the game and nobody’s actually blaming the game for this death. Maybe most people realize that these kids had to have been seriously fucked up before the video game even entered the picture. I’ll eat my crow and like it. My bad. But there are several other cases of where people are blaming the games/movies/Harry Potter/teletubbies for violence that I have just developed a hair trigger to this scenario. again, I apologize.

That being said, This

made me laugh my ass off. Thanks for that Captain Amazing

That sounds more like the Candyman defense (ya know with the hook and everything).

Good to know that if I nuke y’all, well no problem, I’ll just go with the Fallout 3 defense.

I can’t really see how beating a kid to death has any relationship to Mortal Kombat.

Oh wait, there were kicks and punches involved? Clearly, they’re related.
