No, no, I was exaggerating for effect. 
Of course they should be punished under the law, appropriately, and with no mitigation of the sentence for any “societal” factors.
But if we wanted to be proactive, we should examine why these things happen and what we can do to stop them from happening in the future. That has been much of what my posts related to. I’m in no way defending these two schmoes.
