Telephone line to remote work shop

I have a workshop that sits about 250’ from my house. I need a phone back there to catch and make calls during the day. I have tried several different cordless phones, but they don’t have enough range to work, even phones that advertise to work within that range. It may be the trees between the shop and house.

I need to run a regular phone cable to the back and hard-wire the phone in. What I need to know is a source for the cable to run to the shop. I will either run it aerially from tree to tree, or probably just lay it on the ground. Obviously it need to handle wet weather and sunlight/UV. I have a friend who can do all the hookup if I locate the cable.

Looking at info on the web has confused me more than helped. I am sure someone here has done this type of thing before or is familiar with the correct cabling. Can you recommend a cable and source or point me in the right direction?

You can also buy an adapter that will let you use the power lines. It comes in 2 pieces - you plug the phone into one, and plug it intoa wall socket in your shop. You plug the other one into a wall socket in the house, and there’s a second cord that plugs into a phone jack. Sorry, I don’t have a cite. I seem to remember that it was made by RCA.

I’ve heard much more bad than good about those powerline phone jacks - they seem to be good at working for a couple months then just dropping dead. 250’ of outdoor phone cable is going to be cheaper as well.

Just find the place where the phone line from the telephone pole connects to your house. It’s usually a box with a jack. Then go to Radio Shack or some such place and get the necessary phone cables and adapters to reach the shack.
