Television programming you think nobody watches

Cspan?

ETA: Imagine that in all-caps, since this board automatically does turns letters into lowercase, which is annoying in legit cases like this. :stuck_out_tongue:

Aw, man. I wish we had that. I would totally watch it.

Anybody ever catch this show about gold panning that they used to have (well, they might still) on one of those high channels? It had an AWESOME theme song. All about panning for gold, of course.

I have been known to get sucked into the NASA channel.

ETA - also, the Gem Shopping Channel - wtf?

And my grandmother watches several Catholic-stuff shows. One of them is local to her, although it might be broadcast elsewhere, and one is nuns doing the rosary, and I don’t know about the others. They do Mass in her assisted living place, but she likes to get all Massed up.

You think dominoes is bad? I’ve seen Magic: The Gathering tournements on ESPN.

And re: rock-paper-scissors (seriously, who calls it paper-rock-scissors? You’re wrong…it is, and always shall be, rock-paper-scissors.) It’s a very mental game. You have to think about what kind of person your opponent is, and what he’ll throw. You also have to factor in what kind of opponent your opponent thinks you are, and what you think he thinks you’ll throw. And then you have to think about what kind of opponent your opponent thinks you think he is, and what you think he thinks you think he’ll throw.

For instance, you may see me as a ‘paper’ man, and I see you as a ‘rock’ man. You know that I see you as a rock man, so you would actually throw scissors to counter my paper, but you also know that I know that you know I’m paper man, and will throw rock to counter your scissors that you would throw, so then you have to go to paper. Unless I know that you know that I know that, in which case I’ll just go with scissors because you went one level too deep.

As of yet, not one person has staked a claim on “YES! I must watch an auction!”

I think I win for “most useless show evah”.

Heh, once my friend and I for sophomore debates (in English every sophomore forms a three person group to do a debate on an issue), there was an acquaintance and me and my friend. We decided who did the general/middle portion and who closed through rock paper scissors, the third person (our acquaintance) thought we were screwing around because we tied accidentally, I kid you not, at least 45 times, I’m told it was actually around 120 by him but I think he was just getting bored. Rock paper scissors is not a game for the easily distracted.

Good ol’ rock - nothing beats rock!

Baby First TV. This is around 226 on Dish. We caught it once, durring a preview. It is nothing but 60 minute episodes of various “shows”. The shows vary (randomly) from:

someone drawing with sand,
floating lego type blocks falling into a shape,
video live action animals in the wild,
camera pans across kids drawings,
simplistic animation of random things on a merry go round.
Gem Auction Network: This has cheesy lounge type music, complete with the WORST (best?) of an auctioner/QVC features announcer / barker.

Another variation on this, GemsTV I think, sold gems, but reduced the price as the auction went on. – The catch here was, they had a limited amounts of the gems.

Public Access channels: In Cobb County GA, there is one that has GOOD old school PBS shows (That Zimbardo Series on Psychology) AND PSA productions “Be cool about fire safety” (Gilbert Gotfried as Semour Smoke) and Locally produced “Scared Straight” type propaganda based on ““new”” Drivers Education Laws, Violence in Schools, and other low quality stuff for the Junior High crowd. Also, an informercial/information spot on a Ranch that helps at risk teens with behavioral/psychological problems.

Free Speech TV. Again, on Dish Network:
A show that has the same news story, as covered by different countries. ((The bias/slant/spin is real apparent after you watch the basic facts get played out a few dozen times))
Incidentaly, I would have to say that I actually like most of these programs. However, it fits in the OP

That actually sounds very, very cool. I wonder if DirecTV has it?

They tried to get The Puppy Channel onto cable, but I don’t think they ever made it. This American Life ran a story about the founder’s effort to build The Puppy Channel into the start of a new career and life.

For accuracy’s sake, I should say that I thought dominoes was bad. I now scour the schedule looking for it, and sit with a cigar and glass of rum glued to the TV if I can find it.

Through the miracle of youtube, I can give you a little glimpse.

I still can’t believe there’s no CNN Classic. Imagine old episodes of CNN, where we get to see well known news events “as they happen”. I’d tune in to see coverage of the Challenger explosion, or Reagan getting shot, or even the OJ chase.

When I was in college, some business classes were broadcast on TV, ostensibly so people who were taking the class could attend from home. I used to love watching macro-economics 101 and business law, but it was because the profs were very entertaining. The business law professor used to dress in costumes and perform skits with students (or show video skits with his kids). Even after I took his class, I’d still tune in to see “re-runs”.

Didn’t CNN try this for 9/11 one year?

In finding more information per your question: I find that I mis-remembered.

The channel is actually " Link Tv "

Dish: 9410

Direct: 375

The program goes by the name " Mosaic "

And it is the same format… but it is only for Local and Worlds news, as covered by Middle Eastern Countries. (English Speaking Broadcasts, and non, I believe)

http://www.linktv.org/mosaic/20080612

Video of the show, or perhaps a portion from June 12 2008.

And yes, I kinda liked all that I posted. I think we all kinda do, else, we wouldnt be here talking about it.

It used to be interesting, from an anthropological sense, when they showed black-produced movies from the 30s and 40s. Yes, it stretched the definition of “interesting” far beyond what most people would accept, but for a kid from the 50s seeing a film directed by Andy from “Amos 'n Andy” was an eye-opener.

OTOH, they also showed reruns of “Frank’s Place,” which was a great show.

BET today is no longer aimed at anthropologists or cranky, middle-aged folk, black OR white.

On occasion news channels have done anniversary programming where they rebroadcast their coverage. I would like to see some more of this on regular basis. I really would like to see Apollo 11 as it happened be available.

Does anyone really watch QVC or HSN. I can’t imagine watching shows that sell garbage. Also, what’s the deal with infomercials? I’ve only watched one, because it had a sexy broad using a device that I actually helped design.

I’m pretty sure I’ve watched cooking shows on AZN.

I can;’ stand that guy. Some humorless network drone probably thought that he’d be an adequate replacement for Dave Chappelle. He was dead wrong.

My brother watches CSPAN. He’s very bizarre.
I think it only converts to lower case in titles. (check this post)

Never had insomnia, did you? When I bought a house I refused to have a TV in the bedroom. I sleep better now.

That channel has (had? It’s been three years since I had DirecTV) a great weekly show featuring music videos from around the world that you couldn’t see anywhere else.

There seems to be a group of people in US TV who are determined to create an all African American sitcom - some sort of latter day Cosby I guess. Once in a while I catch one really late at night. They are all really cheap, really bad and interchangeable. I can never tell which is which. They seem to feature lots of young, good looking black folks in some sort of communal situation - living together, at college or some other wholesome schtick. I have never remembered one of their titles but I am sure I have never laughed at any of the “jokes”. The scripts are uniformly dreadful. I have often wondered where they were aired in the US.
