Television: tell me which to buy, please.

We watch little TV, but our old one is very old and is starting to burn oil. So, we’re gonna buy a new one. We have purchased a new stand, and it is lovely. It can handle a 40 to 50 inch flat screen, per my gf.

So, if I am happy spending under a grand, what TV should go on the stand? We have WiFi and would use the TV primarily for watching movies. The last time we watched our current TV was the Superbowl a year ago. Movies are currently viewed on laptop or tablet.

So, if I go to Sam’s club, what should I bring home?

Thanks!

Other than “The biggest screen the GF will allow” it’s pretty wide open.

Sam’s has a handful of 50" TVs that sell for under $600, so price isn’t apt to be an issue. I’d advise avoiding Vizio as they tend to be “disposable” and not repairable if they fail. I’m a bit partial to Panasonic plasmas, but I’ve also got some smaller LCD sets from LG that look pretty good.

We upgraded our old Hitachi rear projection LCD 50-inch to a Panasonic Viera 3D plasma a year ago. Wow, just wow. A year later we are still learning all of its features. It’s no longer available. It had a MSRP of around $1,300. He got it for $800.

anything from a recognizable brand (Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, etc.) that has the features you want for the price you want to pay.

Plasma tv’s should only be placed in rooms with low natural light as the glare can be a distraction. We have a Panasonic plasma in our basement and the picture is fantastic.

We have both a Sony and a Sharp lcd upstairs, and they are pretty good but nothing special. I’ll repeat the previous statement of sticking with a more established brand.

I have 2 Panasonic 50 ’ flat screens from Sears. Paid about 600 for each. Haven’t had any trouble with them.
