Tell em about your favorite B&B's in New England

I’m planning somehting special for me and a sweety this holiday season, and one thing I’ve always wanted to do is go to a nice B&B and relax in comfort, somewhere far from the city for a couple of nights.

I figured most Dopers would probably like to relax in style so you’d all have some great suggestions to make. I’d really like a place with some type of Romance package, and reasonable rates. Might even like to do some horseback riding, or skiing during the day.

So what say you Dopers? Where have you gone, and where would you like to go, and what have been your experiences with B&B’s?

What part of New England? There are several nice ones I’ve been to. Some are such well-kept secrets that I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you.

Will you at least wait to kill me until AFTER I went?

Closer to NY State would be best. Vermont, Massachusetts, rhode island. New Hampshire and Maine are way too far away (maybe some day when I have more money -and time-). I’m looking for anything around 2-4 hours travel time from NYC.

In that case you’re looking at Connecticut.

The best places I know are in Eastern MA and Southern NH.

If this isn’t too far south, I recommend Alpine Haus in Vernon, NJ. My wife and I rented it for a weekend in July '00 for our wedding. Stay in one of the suites in the Carriage House. Jack and his wife (the owners, I don’t remember her name anymoer) were wonderful.

Yeah, it’s in NJ. But it’s close to NYC (take Route 3 to 46 to 23 to 515). And it is – literally – right across the street from Vernon Valley ski resort (which you may realize is not as good as more northern ski resorts).

Thanks, that’s actually very close to me, I’m going to give them a look.

My wife and I love Randall’s Ordinary (technically, an Inn, not a B&B) just outside of Mystic, CT:

Cozy Colonial rooms and great food cooked over an open hearth. And if you’re feeling crazy, you can drive up the street and gamble at Foxwoods Casino.
A nice B&B: http://www.bishopsgate.com

It’s right across the street from the Goodspeed Opera House, which is a fun place to see a play or musical.

You’re welcome. I’d like it if I could direct some business their way, as they were great. If you have any specific questions, fire away.

Oh, and I notice that Vernon Valley has changed their name to Mountain Creek. There’s a link to their website from the Alpine Haus page, in case you didn’t notice. And Hidden Valley ski resort is right nearby also. Not as big but, unless things have changed drastically, less (and nicer) patrons.
