(Or Vermont. Or Maine.) I want to go away for the weekend with the missus, and of course there are ten billion B&Bs to choose from in New England. I thought I might winnow the list a little by putting the question here.
So here’s what I want: something not too expensive, reasonably close to a ski area, and ideally with a fireplace in the room. Closer to Boston is better than farther from Boston. South-central NH, southern Maine, western Massachusetts, and maybe even southeastern Vermont would all do.
And by the way, I notice that many websites make a distinction between B&Bs and “country inns.” Is there any difference, other than the breakfast?
My wife did a full week driving through New England (west through Mass., north through VT, across NH and then to the coast of Maine and south), and B&B’d it all the way.
I’ll try to remember which ones we went to, but one that stood out was this one. I’ll try to post back with others…
About 3 hours away from Boston is the Christmas Farm Inn.. It’s about 2 minutes from Black Mountain and Wildcat Mountain, and does have fireplaces in most of the rooms. They also have an indoor pool and a nice spa. It’s in Jackson, NH which is a nice little town and close to the outlets in Conway, NH.
The Backside Inn in Goshen, NH. My husband and I have been there twice and it’s wonderful. The food is excellent. Their dinners are worth every penny and their Sunday brunch is a religious experience.
I’ve stayed in only a handful of places in New Hampshire, and wouldn’t you know, this was one of them! I was there last summer. It’s a great place, though it seems like I’ve seen a lot of North Conway recently.
The prices on this place look pretty reasonable, too. Plus it’s close to Sunapee, which I had been considering anyway.
My husband and I stayed here during part of our honeymoon and it was very nice. Although I must admit the attached bar/microbrewery was a big part of the attraction. We could just stumble to our room after a night at the bar. Good times
They also have a wide assortment of Eggs Benedict in the morning - if fact, I think this was the first place I ever ate Eggs Benedict. Yum!
