Tell me about domain registration

This is a bit of a GQ, but I wanted to know who was a good place as well.

I have a web site from Verizon and my paid account. I’d like to get my own domain name now, like www.eddiethehead.com, and have it go to my page I have set up.

So how do I go about doing this? I’ve looked a bit, places like godaddy.com, and domain.com. They seem to have webpages already included. Also from what I gather, unless you pay a lot they also include banner ads. Since I don’t need the space I don’t really care about that. Does the $10 have a way for me to just point at my page? Anything else that you can think of would help too.

That said, who are the better places, or are they all the same? I don’t really care about the space, as I don’t think I’ll go over the 10megs I have now. I have email so if it comes with it then fine, if not big deal. I’m just looking for the cheapest way to have some space. I would think I would have this page for at least a couple of years, so a cheap first year and not cheap 2-5 years is not as good as more up front but cheaper in the long run.

Domain Direct has a “Domain Parking” acount whereby they just forward requests for your personal domain name to where ever you actually host your webpages. It includes email accounts and email forwarding.

Godaddy.com does NOT include space. It’s like $9.20 (after taxes) per domain name. They do a great job of trying to get you to buy extras (like web space, email, security, etc) while you check out but you don’t have to buy any of it.

I really love Godaddy, recommend them to all my clients, and keep over 100 domain names with them. Their support pages are pretty thorough, so you should be able to figure out how to point your Godaddy domain to your Verizon site by reading those. If not, they do have a decent phone support option - it’s not toll-free but the guys on the other end are competent and nice.
