I just moved into a NYC apartment and since I’m on the first floor, I’m hearing a little more outside noise than I would like. Yes yes, I know it’s NYC (I’ve lived here eight years) but there’s (relatively) quite a lot of light that comes through the space around the front door, which of course means sound is coming through as well.
It’s not really the kind of thing my landlord would care much about, so I’m looking to fix it myself. It’s a leased apartment so I can’t go crazy, but at least I don’t have to worry about weather or things like that. Is this stuff any good? Or does anyone have any other ideas?
Are you talking about light and sound coming in where the door meets the door frame? In other words where the door opens and closes?
The stuff you linked to is for sealing gaps between the door, or window, frame and the surrounding structure. Not for sealing the gaps where the door doesn’t quite fit the frame.
It seems like you might bee needing a product similar to this
As GaryM points out, the foam stuff is good for filling voids where you don’t want any movement.
I would suggest something like this weatherstrip. It is installed on the door frame where the door closes against the vinyl tube. Install with the door closed and the strip snug against it. You may need a door sweep at the bottom of the door as well.
Thanks guys! Yeah, I do mean it’s the space around the door itself, not the frame (where the door opens and closes, like the door is a touch too small).
The weatherseal tape looks like it might be my best bet, assuming it keeps sound out as well as it keeps weather out. The bottom of the door is actually the best of the four sides… it’s just a really poorly-cut door.
