We just saw him on Austin City Limits and I really liked him. That’s saying a lot; I haven’t liked any new popular musician since Lennie Kravitz.
What’s the deal with him? Is he very popular? What’s he playing - would you call that jazz or rock? Educate this fifty-year-old, please - I may go and get one of his CD’s.
And how long is he going to last at that level of energy output?
What Jamie mostly plays are pop tunes, but as a jazz player would. Despite his crossover appeal, technically he’s categorized as jazz by most people. I don’t know about his mainstream popularity, but on the jazz charts he’s a bestseller.
He’s GREAT live. I’ve seen him twice now. That’s a good question about his energy output. He acts like he’s on coke when he’s onstage, jumping up on his piano and running around.
His most recent album Catching Tales is his best so far, but the one previous to that, Twentysomething, has some great tunes also.
Yes, he had the audience screaming for more on Austin City Limits. Good thing he followed Lyle Lovett, rather than vice versa! He’s pretty young to be such a clever lyric writer, good piano player, good singer and consummate showman. And it was just a three-man band.
If I ever see him playing some circuit here in the U.S., I’ll have to go see him. It’d be like seeing a young, grungy brash Elton John.
