Ahmad Jamal has died

Jazz great dead at 92. Pianist, composer and jazz legend for six decades.

Whoa for a minute I thought you were saying Justice Jamal of the Supreme Court of Canada had died.

Apparently nobody gave a shit either way.

Weird. It came up in my feed of new articles.

He was really good. At least he lived a long and productive life. For a number of years, I enjoyed listening to his album Ahmad’s Blues (recorded live in Chicago in 1958). I stopped playing it only because I lost track of it, along with a number of loose CDs. This would be a good time to sort through them all to find it.

His stuff bordered on ‘cocktail jazz’ but evidently Miles Davis was a big fan, especially of the ‘spaces’ in his playing.

I can see that. We saw him in concert once and I wasn’t crazy about his music, but he was solid.

“At The Pershing” is a jazz classic to me. I missed the news of his death. RIP.
