Tell me about your PS2 DVD experiences

I have heard that the PS2 is a terrible DVD player, and I would have to agree. A hell of alot of DVD’s, brand new ones, wont even boot up in the POS. But every once in a while I read about someone who has no problems with theres.

I am using the drivers that came with the Sony PS2 remote and it still will only boot about 75-80% of the DVD’s I rent or own.

I have some el cheapo porno DVD’s that wont boot, but that is ok. I would expect them not to in this touchy thing. But I rented Spy Game, Evil Dead 2, and Ali and the only one that would boot was Ali (crappy movie too…)

I have run a cleaner thru my system to no effect. Games all play fine, but its the movies that dont want to.

Tell me what % of DVD’s will play in yours so I can figure out if I have a hardware problem with mine because it is my main player in the bedroom so if I have to get a new one, then so be it.

I’ve heard that some of the first-run PS2’s ever shipped to the US came with really poor DVD playing capabilities, but this was cleared up in later shipments. Perhaps yours was part of that first wave… or it could be that yours happened to have been damaged in transit, or something.

Well, mine works great, never had any trouble with the DVD player. I use the out of the box drivers, never felt like grabbing the remote, since I have a normal DVD player as well. My PS2 is a version 5.

I haven’t had a problem yet too. I don’t use it as a DVD player too often since I have one anyway, but whenever I rent a movie I pop it in the PS2 just to see if it works. I reckon I’ve tried maybe 30 movies so far, and they’ve all played.

I 'm probably going to check out Spy Game soon. If that one works in mine then we’ll know something’s up with your system.

I’ve had mine for about a year and a half and rented probably over 100 DVD’s. never found one that doesn’t work. I haven’t tried the ones you mentioned in particular, though. I use the game controller as a remote (unweildy, yes, but it works, and is cheap.) I’d guess it’s either your remote drivers messing it up,(is it a sony remote or a knockoff?) or as SPOOFE said, an older system from before they got the kinks out.

Mine has worked on every DVD i’ve rented, but i bought mine Jan 31. I have the remote, but no official memory card, so i haven’t bothered to install it yet.

I too have never had a problem with my PS2. I’ve the Sony remote and also bought a disc which allows me to play DVD’s from any region. I have bought about 50 DVD’s and rented a lot aswell.

I know someone who does have problems playing DVD’s but that only happened after a steak and kidney was left in the oven too long and filled the room with smoke and thus f**ked up his PS2.

I hate it as a DVD player. How do you get rid of having to enter a f*#@in parental code every time I put a DVD in? I’m too lazy to look in manual (don’t know where the hell it is anyway).
I hate the remote, (i have the cool RCA lookin one). Getting to and using the menu is annoying. My regular DVD player is easier to use.

Had my PS2 over a year. We watch all our DVD’s on it. Never had a problem. We’re using driver 1.30

I have the exact same problem. However, this is not the fault of the PS2. The fault is mine because I’m too lazy to look up the answer.

My friend bought his on the US release day, and it had serious DVD playback issues, but you’d only notice it after watching the movie for some time. Not sure what the bug was, exactly, but after about an hour or so of playback it would start skipping and then freeze altogether. Strange.

I’ve never used mine for DVD playback (just bought mine anyway, so never had a chance to) as I have a regular DVD player. Just more anecdotal evidence for you.

DVDs from any region? Do tell…

I’ve watched Evil Dead 2 on my PS2, and not had any problems.
I’ve yet to have any DVD playback problems with it, and I usually use it to watch DVDs (it has a better picture than my regular DVD player.)

By the way, I got rid of the parental code thing when I first got my PS2- I don’t remember how, though.

Just one more data point: Bought my PS2 last December, with the intention to use it as a DVD player as well as for games. Never had any problems playing DVD’s with it. I also just use the game controller as a remote.

No problems with my friend’s PS2. The image is grainy, but it’s running through a high-end television. Anything budget dvd player is going to look a bit iffy. The only disks I can recall not working are Big Trouble in Little China and the 2nd disk of the Clerks animated series. At least it’s cheap when you factor in the fact that this dvd player can play games, too…

Hmm… so wierd… Clerks animated series (both disks) works fine on my PS2. Never had a parental control thing popup…

I have the V1 PS2, plays all dvd flicks just fine. I think its with the remote dvd drivers you are using so,
just take out the memory card & try to play the dvds then. You can’t use the remote cause
the drivers are on the card. Also, PS2s have a diagnosis menu on them that is used to get
dvds to work. Pretty spiffy, eh?

I’ve had mine for about 15 months, and have never had problems except when the DVD is scratched or the PS2 is dirty. I think the OP is the exception rather than the rule.

My first PS2 had significant problems with dvd playback, and then one day (actually only a week after I bought it) the drive died in the middle of a game.

I returned it and got a new one that came with Gran Turismo 3, which at the time was a newer revision than the regular ones, and it has far fewer dvd playback issues.

It’s still not very good, though. Lots of moves have problems partway through, like Tron and Memento, and you wind up having to skip over scenes that it can’t handle. And I had a weird problem with Spy Game where it kept turning the subtitles on and off randomly. That one was a rental, though, so I really can’t vouch for the condition of the disc. The others are my own, and are in perfect condition.

Hmmm… Sounds like I may be having more problems than most. Maybe I should lay it flat instead of standing on its side. I got the one that came in the first batch of GT3 combo packs.
