Tell me about your secret music - What music should we know more about?

Pete Townshend and Ronnie Laine did a perfectly wonderful album called Rough Mix. It alternates between Who-like rock numbers and folky musings. The lyrics are intelligent and clever throughout. I’ve never talked to anybody else who has this treasure.

Ensemble Gurrufio is a miraculous cross between jazz and Venezuelan folk music, all instrumental. The CD is called El Cruzao, and as far I know, it’s their only recording. I got it from Public Radio Music Source right after the band appeared on St. Paul Sunday. When I play it, folks tell me it’s like being in a little cafe somewhere tropical. The individual musicians have probably surfaced somewhere else; Cheo Hurtado, David Pena, Cristobal Soto, and Luis Julio Toro.

Only on vinyl.

Powerman 5000 is a blend of metal, rock, and a bit of techno with awesome lyrics (see “Free”) and an outstanding live show.

Poe is my second recommendation. Beautiful voice, powerful lyrics, just plain totally awesome female rock.

Others are Pete Yorn, Liz Phair, Deadman, Eels, Flipsyde, Flogging Molly, Hinder, Imani Copola, K.M.F.D.M., Le Tigre, Local H, and Miri Ben-Ari.

Another secret music I have is a CD by a young South African named RJ Benjamin.

I only have the CD because I know his cousin. I have no idea where it’s available other than South Africa and maybe Europe.

All I know is, he has a great voice and writes some great songs. He’s a bit like Jamiroquai, but better.

Bella Morte: http://bellamorte.com, Goth/punk/80’s
Hogwaller Ramblers - Very proficient country/bluegrass
Squirrel Nut Zippers - Swinging jazz

All 3 of these bands have an awesome live show, although I think Bella is the only one still touring.

I cannot second this enough. Gogol Bordello is the single best band I have seen live. A vodka-soaked gypsy-punk-rock cabaret that whips the crowd into a frenzied, dancing whirlwind. Their albums do not do their live shows justice, but they are really damn good and excellent to listen to when you want to just DANCE.

I’m rather fond of Electric Six. It’s a sort of really danceable disco-rock, with pretty funny lyrics.

Two words…

Spanker Madness

They were supposed to be on Conan O’Brien’s show last week (Wed. or Thurs., I think) and I stayed up late to catch them. But for some reason they were not on.

Anyone know what happened? Did they reschedule?

Sorry if this is a hijack.

I don’t think anyone’s suggested contemporary classical music yet! Never mind, just google my username.

Here’s the thing; I’m not in the LA area (I’m in NY). I get Brad’s auction lists of 78s and played with Reynolds when he was in NY 12 years ago. (You must know Mora’s Modern Rhythmists; I think they’re tremendous.)

Nope, but the name is intriguing.

Kahimi Karie - Twee pop. Lovely Japanese lady whispering in French. Listen to I Am A Kitten for starters.

Of Montreal, Butterscotch, Butter 08, The Shins, Belle & Sebastian, Kleenex
