Tell me about your summer vacation

Not as much as I’d like. And, as with most cruises, you’re in port just for the day, so you have to make your plans accordingly. I loved Santiago and Viña del Mar, though–and it was really cool going thru the Panama Canal.

Last week of August, we’re going to cruise from Baltimore to Bermuda, Boston, and Newport - 8 nights total. My husband’s parents are coming with us and our daughter will be watching our house and our critters. It was a spur of the moment plan when I saw what a good deal we could get. Now it’s just a matter of counting the days…

We are away the last couple of weeks in August and we’ll be doing what we’ve done for the last couple of years. Taking the Eurotunnel and driving to Austria.

We’ve rented an apartment near Zell am See and will spend the time hiking up and down mountains, swimming and sailing in the lake, seeing waterfalls, gorges, glaciers.

The kids (4 and 6) love it. There is an adventure playground round every corner and beautiful open air swimming pools in every town. Food and drink is cheap and with the Salzburger Land or Hohe Tauern cards the attractions are too.

We’ll also be driving over the Grossglockner Pass which is utterly stunning.

Oh, and a day at the Tauern Spa!

I realise I’m gushing like a tour guide but If you like mountains, lakes and beer it really is hard to beat.

I took mine in March–my father and I went to Tucson, where we saw the saguaros and the zoo and, being fascinated with church architecture, I tried to take pictures of every church in town. Then we went to a nature preserve where I saw lots of birds and some hippies. After that we went to Tombstone, where I got to watch the sun come up over Boot Hill while listening to the pretty birdies rev up their songs for the morning.

I might go to Las Vegas and Santa Barbara CA later this summer.

Well, I’m going… somewhere… the second week of July. One of the perks of my job is I get free accommodations in really nice resort condominiums. The only catch is that it is like flying standby. I’ll know exactly where probably a week or two before. I’m requesting somewhere on the FL panhandle, but if it comes down to the wire I’ll happily change to where we normally go… Hilton Head. Also, my wife has seen some resorts in Vermont she wants to try so that could be an option. Clearly we will be driving. Some people would hate this, but I think it is kind of fun playing vacation roulette… I know we will go someplace really nice, but the exact place is up in the air. And since the condos would normally rent for a couple grand and I’m planning to take 6 of us I can’t complain at all. In the past 23 years I’ve never NOT gotten something where I wanted to go.

Several trips planned this year (or already executed).

Last month took the RV and Rhino for 4 days of off-roading and relaxing (just me and my dog).

Next month we’re taking the RV to Colorado for sightseeing, biking, and 4-wheeling (again) to some ghost towns I’ve researched (using the truck, not the rhino)

July, flying to Sedona for a couple of days with a friend. We’re taking about 4-5 days across a weekend.

Late august or early September, will take the RV+boat to my favorite lake and spend the days on one of the islands (me, dogs, bbq, cooler, and a few books). This is my favorite annual trip.

So, for the OP’s question:
Vehicles: Dodge truck, Rhino, Cessna, Trek (w doggie trailer), Ski-boat
Lodging: 5th-wheel, Hotel

Well not really a holiday but I’ve quit and am working my notice here in Gabon and in two weeks I will be moving of to Ulsan Korea. So it looks like for me Summer will be on Hyundae Beachee!

The usual – a week in Cape May with friends. The core group has been the same since 1996, with various additions and deletions over the years. Turns out both now-adult kids of one of the couples will be there this year – looking forward to that!

Five days in Chicago in late June with my fiancee… neither of us has ever been, and we’re really looking forward to it. If it’s anything like the past trips we’ve taken, it’ll be a lot of walking and sightseeing during the day, a lot of delicious food in the evening, and at least one or two “hey, they looks/sounds cool, let’s try it!” moments for completely random stuff. Can’t wait!

DiosaBellissima - I just got back from Belize about a month ago. We spent a week on the island of San Pedro, a little north from Belize City. Had a great time, and Missus Coder and I plan to go back again some day. If you get the chance, go to the ATM cave. It’s not exactly cheap, but it’s totally cool. You actually swim in through the entrance of the cave, and then splash, wade, and swim in the stream flowing through the cave as you go deeper and deeper in. Best cave trip I’ve ever done!

I have 2 summer trips coming up. Both are basically extended, long weekend trips. #1 is driving from Michigan to North Carolina to see my wife’s mother, and go there for her birthday party. She’s 80 years old, and never had a birthday party before, so her son is throwing one for her. We’ll also stop on the way there and visit the Columbus Zoo, and do the ziplining tour there too. This is the zoo that Jack Hanna used to be in charge of, and I’m looking forward to seeing it.

The 2nd trip is a bike ride - about 350 miles in 5 days. It’s the DALMAC, and runs from East Lansing, MI to Mackinaw City, MI. Only I’m on the 5-day UP route, meaning I get to ride across the Mackinac Bridge and across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to Sault Ste. Marie. I’m looking forward to it! I got a new bike this year, and it rides like a dream.

In July we’ll be spending a week in a house by a quiet lake in the White Mountains in Piermont, New Hampshire. My wife, daughter and I usually stay in a small cabin on the lake but this year we’re going with another family and renting a larger place next door. The reservation has been make for a couple of months.
