I haven’t been this psyched about a vacation in years. My boyfriend and I will be spending about 3 weeks in Thailand (mostly around Koh Samui) - we plan to taking a diving course (he’s been, but it would be my first time ever) and a cooking course, but mostly just laze around on the beach. We have two days in Bangkok at a 5 star hotel. Then we’ll fly over to the UK, part ways to hang out with respective friends for a week or so, and then meet again in Ireland to see his folks for about ten days. They live outside of Belfast, nearer to the countryside, so I’m really looking forward to that (although also a bit nervous!).
I’m excited because I haven’t had a proper long vacation in a few years, but also because this is our first vacation together. Hopefuly it doesn’t end with us stabbing each other or anything. :dubious:
So what about everyone else? What far and exotic destinations are y’all headed to?
I have none. I only like to go places with someone, and currently there is no one to go with…
Also, I am aggressively trying to pay off my house, so my money is tight.
OTOH, I have been taking business trips to London and am thinking I might try to go to Ireland for a week. I’m not sure where or what I would do, but I hear it is a beautiful country. This would be in the fall.
I’ll be arriving at the end of this month and will be at the Dopefest July 11-13.
So if you want to know about Cricket, Yorkshire Pudding or Cockney, now’s your chance.
After I fly back to the UK, I’m going on the Eurostar train through the Channel Tunnel to Ghent, Belgium. For a chess tournament.
Khadji, Ireland is gorgeous. You can take some awesome daytrips from Dublin (Glendalough is stunning) but if you have time the west of Ireland is fantastic as well.
glee, thanks for the offer, but I’ve been to your fair country before. Although cricket will forever be a mystery to me.
I was going to do Utah, too, but my Mom is coming with and she doesn’t camp and she wanted to see the Grand Junction wineries (anyone have any favorites, and a good B&B to stay at?) and Mesa Verde.
I will get to visit Utah’s parks someday, I hope. I’ve wanted to for years. Time & money just doesn’t allow it on this trip.
September promises our annual trip to the beach; Pompano Beach, Florida, to be exact. SeptemberDay’s mom has a timeshare down there that the three of us go to every year. It’s really nice because our week is at the end of summer, so things aren’t crowded but stores and restaurants haven’t closed up for the winter. Swimming, snorkeling, sun and jai alai!
November 2009: Cruise on the Carnival Liberty. Leaving from Miami, going to Half Moon Cay (Carnival’s private island in the Bahamas), then on to St. Thomas, San Juan, and Grand Turk. Highlights to include deep-sea fishing, a helmet dive, and a zip-line tour through the Puerto Rican rain forest.
March 2010: Long weekend in Las Vegas (I’ve never been) to celebrate my BFF’s 40th birthday. Vague plans for the moment include Terry Fator, a magic act (Doug Henning maybe?), and either Cirque du Soleil (either Mystere or O) or Blue Man Group, plus supper at some Brazilian place my BFF raves about.
August 2010: Wisconsin Dells for my 40th birthday, probably staying at either Kalihari or Ho Chunk. Definitely hitting the indoor Kalihari water park.
December 2010: Walt Disney World with a group of 11 (four couples and three redshirts/hangers-on/non-coupled siblings we invited), staying at the Caribbean Beach resort.
Leaving this Friday for a weeklong Alaskan cruise with my parents, brother and his family. I don’t know nothin’ ‘bout no cruisin’, having never been before but I suspect Charo will *not *be aboard nor will I be having pina coladas on the Lido deck with Isaac. I’ve never particularly been interested in taking a cruise but I’d go just about anywhere to escape the hellish, record breaking heat we’re having here right now and floating past some glaciers seems just the ticket.
Sadly, I don’t think I’ll be taking one this year. I usually go to Martha’s Vineyard every year, but money is going to be a little tight. And in the past, I was happy to go either alone or with a girlfriend – but now I have certain emotional associations with that place and a certain person that going would just be sad.
Maybe I can take an extended weekend on the Cape instead.
Cuba! Last two weeks in August, flying into Havana for a long weekend, then to Santa Clara to see the Che stuff, down to the south coast for some diving/ sightseeing (staying halfway between Cienfuegos and Trinidad), then back to Havana for another long weekend before we fly home. Very very VERY excited… must replace my union card, which I lost in the move, before I go…
4 Days to Cancun and counting. My Wife and I have been several times before, but I had two free airline tickets, and hotels are cheap thanks to the unwarrented panic over swine flue, drug cartels, and random hurricanes. So we’ll be spending some quality kid-free time at the pool bar.
Took mine last month. I left chilly Edmonton, Canada and went to sunny LA. Managed to squeeze in a lot of stuff. Disneyland/California Adventure (4 days), Universal Studios, Legoland, Medieval Times, Venice Beach, Santa Monica Pier, Hollywood & Beverly Hills tour, etc. I was exhausted when I got back, but had a GREAT time.
Left Anaheim in capri’s and a short sleeved top - arrived in Edmonton to SNOW in MAY! My sunburn really looked out of place. I could have wept. I was ready to turn around and head back.
I’m packing up now for a month long tour of China with my mom. I’ve been living here for a year, but I still haven’t really had the chance to see the country. I can’t wait!
We took trips on fishing boats to see icebergs and whales - saw plenty of both and what hospitality from the crews of the boats!!! Plenty of food/booze on both trips - great times.
Also went to a geologically protected area on South Avalon Peninsula. The Fossils are out of this world and the Staff are so knowlegeable- a really great time.
