Tell me how to buy a television antenna!

So, I’ve decided to ditch cable television - I don’t watch enough TV to justify the expense, and I’ve got a Netflix subscription. However, I still want to be able to watch the odd program from the networks, so I’ve decided to buy an antenna.

What’s the cheapest reasonably decent antenna I could buy? And do I need to buy anything beyond the antenna itself? My television is a 32-inch flatscreen.

Start here.

if you are located in a major metro area then you might get by with a rabbit ears and bow tie/loop antenna placed near the set (it is called a set top antenna style because when sets were big you placed it on top). you likely wouldn’t need an amplified antenna (which only makes things worse if you have strong signals).

all depends where you are, if you have VHF and UHF stations, what direction the stations are from you.

has very good information

I assume you want hi-def. It will depend on your location relative to the transmitters. Some people are getting great reception from built in antennas on their sets. Does your set have an internal antenna?

Additionally, does your set have a tuner? Depending on when it was built, it very well may not.

and in the USA that would be a digital tuner for high power stations.
