As the mother of whiterabbit’s brother, let me add that the Air Force was a terrific experience for him. Once he finished training, he really enjoyed it – he lived in a dorm, had all the consumer electronics he could find, and had a job with people he enjoyed.
Also, one advantage to the Air Force over the other services – thanks to a program called the Community College of the Air Force, enlisted personnel get college credit for a lot of their training. So although Young Tiger had barely a year’s worth of college credit when he went in, he’s coming out only one class short of being a junior. On that note: Make sure your brother signs up for all the GI Bill benefits available! There’s the basic program, plus an extra benefit that requires a $100 a month contribution for one year but that provides an extra $10,000 or something like that in additional benefits. Young Tiger did, and so he’s completely financially independent where college is concerned how, which pleases us all.
