My block has “Nightfurries” and “SquirtleSquad”.
One of mine is “yournetworknameisboring”.
I was hoping that our neighbours would take it as a challenge and adopt more interesting network names. But no they are as boring as ever.
Every network I can see from home is secured with at least WPA2, some also use WPA3.
You absolutely can. I just tried on a brand new Verizon CR1000B - what Verizon provides when you get Fios service - and you have to dig down a bit in the settings and set “Security” to “None”.
I also tried with an Eero Pro, and that doesn’t allow an open connection, you have to use at least WPA2 security on that.
Computer security expert Bruce Schneier says that he leaves his home network unprotected. He says that security should be provided by each device in the network, and network security is unnecessary. Leaving his network open is “basic politeness”. It is admittedly a controversial viewpoint.
That article is 17 years old, I wonder if he still does it? Especially since now it’s trivially easy to setup an open guest network on the same AP as your main network, which is isolated on a different subnet.
I have Bill Wi the Science Fi as my household/guest network a la Chronos, and the inverted Bill Fi the Science Wi as my personal one. Visible from my PC are Majiin Buu, Yoshi, and Buggle Eyes. I’m due for an update, if only to have more interesting passwords - “There Is No Password” and “Why Do You Want To Know” always get a chuckle from me and an eyeroll from others.
I also find those funny. I used “I Already Told You” as a password for a while.
For a little while we had an ‘FBI Surveillance Van’ network in the area, but it’s gone now. Everything is either a family name, or the default provider’s name (mostly Spectrum).
I’ve got ‘Zap Rowsdower’ and ‘All Hail the Glow Cloud’.
Besides the usual generic ones, I currently see in my neighborhood Brocolli, NOWCONNECTED, Sparky, TheFliz2, and TheGriswolds.
The only humorous one I see is Hoes Nest. Mine is not funny at all.
WeCanHearYouHavingSex
That’s actually quite a funny name for a Wifi network.
Tourette Clan … and I have a pretty good feeling I know which neighbour’s it is
I was just at a kids park near a large townhouse complex and while I was searching for a particular WiFi signal I saw a few interesting ones:
Virus Factory Two of these, one was 2.4 and the other one 5.0 which I would guess the frequency
Bandits Bandwidth
Bandits Bandwidth minions Maybe the wifi for the Bandits children?
Cant decide I guess they are being honest.
MomMom97 I think it was 97, but definitely MomMom

Just scanned from my house. Surprisingly, two of the nearby SSIDs are the street addresses of the homes and one is the owner’s first name (female). That seems rather unusual.
Yes, there are 2 active WiFi bands in the USA, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, channels are individual frequencies within each band. 2.4 has better range & penetrates obstacles more easily, but 5 GHz has higher bandwidth.
There’s also 6 GHz wifi, but it’s not very common yet.
And note that 5 GHz Wifi and 5G mobile data have no relation to each other.
I am aware of the different bands, I was just assuming that is why they were named that way as I have done something similar at home myself. I did not actually check to see if the names corresponded with the band though, for all I know they reversed the names just to make it more confusing.

There’s no way of proving it’s theirs, but the wifi name “420forever” appeared a day or two after the spacey neighbors moved in.
Another one I saw recently. ConnectForMalware (there might have been underscored but I don’t remember). It is good to know what you are getting I guess.
