Tell me some interesting trivia that no one else knows at the SDMB

The Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike (between Philly and Lancaster, natch) in Pennsylvania was the first road in the US where drivers were legally required to do what while driving on the road?

Drive on the right side of the road.

Florida is in Massachusetts.

If you take the four current main American coins - penny, nickel, dime, quarter - the penny contains the least amount of copper.

I think that this was the only one in this thread that I already knew, so you lose. But it’s cool nonetheless!

I must read that book, but so many of the faskinating fakts I think I have, someone will say, oh yeah I read about that in Cryptonomicon!

Something I just read in the new Charles Schulz bio:

Despite its popularity and renown, the George Herriman comic strip “Krazy Kat”, at its peak, never appeared in more than 40 newspapers.

[li]Drummer Carlo Little gave Keith Moon (The Who) drumming lessons and turned down being a member of the not-yet-famous Rolling Stones. Later in life, he supported himself by driving a bread truck.[/li][li]Before Paul McCartney wrote the lyrics for “Yesterday,” the working title was “Scrambled Eggs.”[/li][/ul]

[li]If you type “WAIT6502,1″ into a Commodore PET with BASIC V2 (1979), it will show the string “MICROSOFT!” at the top left corner of the screen. Legend has it Bill Gates himself inserted this easter egg “after he had had an argument with Commodore founder Jack Tramiel”, “just in case Commodore ever tried to claim that the code wasn’t from Microsoft”.[/li]
[li]When designing ENIAC (the first general-purpose electronic computer), J. Presper Eckert ran an experiment where he starved lab rats for a few days and then gave them samples of all the available types of cable to determine which they least liked to eat.[/li][/ul]

So is ice, but not coal, and by extension not sugar. :stuck_out_tongue:

Seriously? That’s almost as bad as naming a boy “Sue”.

I’ve been reading The Story of English, and found out the word “poppycock” is from a Dutch word meaning “soft dung”. I plan to adopt this wholesale, because it amuses me to think I’m telling someone something is shit without their knowing it.

JK = Just Kidding.
