Tell me your best tricks for thin/thinning hair

Are you using a two percent or five percent solution?

This is a near-term concern for me (just had weight-loss surgery). Vitamin supplements. Hair spray. It shouldn’t be permanent, but I would consider Propecia or Rogaine if it were.

I know that finasteride is effective in treatment of female hirsutism, but does it have any effect in the treatment of female-pattern baldness?

Not really.

Agree. If you are a guy, just own it. If you try to hide it - ironically it becomes more obvious.

5%. Even though I am a woman, it is what my dermatologst recommended.

When I give a darn, which is less and less these days, I use the old mousse and blow dry your hair upside down trick. Then don’t do any further styling till the hair is cool again. Sometimes I’ll add a *little *tease to the rear crown. That’s doubly helpful because I also have the lovely “flat back of the head” syndrome.

I’ve bought a few cheapish clip in hair extensions, and they’re nice to fill out an updo or just cover a lazy bun (which on me is about the size of a button mushroom), but they seem to get tangled/dusty easily.

I just bought a bunch of hats.

There’s a product called Joan Rivers Great Day hair powder. It looks like a big eyeshadow, and comes with a special brush. You brush it around your part, and it colors the scalp under your thin hair and creates an illusion of thicker hair.

I was very skeptical about it, but I went ahead and ordered some and I’ll be darned if it doesn’t work extremely well. You’d think that it just made your visible scalp now look brown instead of pale, but somehow, it completely conceals the scalp. Check out some non-advertising videos on youtube.

The downside is that if you have a lot of scalp showing (i.e., not just a wide part in your hair), it takes awhile to cover it all and you must keep your arms in the air a long time while applying it. Also, it’s hard to see the back of your head.

My problem isn’t that my hair is thinning, instead the gray roots are so obvious and the longer i leave between dyes the worse it looks. It’s such a striking contrast that it ends up looking like im losing my hair where the white roots are showing.

So my solution was to get it all cut off and start fresh with no colour. Au naturel.

I am now sporting a very short pixie cut and should be colour free next haircut. And because i no longer have to part my hair you cant see the roots, which is a bonus.

I’m a man, but this is what I do. I just got my hair cut a couple days ago and it’s amazing how much thicker and healthier my hair looks just from the cut and style.

I pay around $24 for a 6 month supply of minox. I know they make one “for women” (my wife has tried it), but like most things marketed to women it’s more expensive. I don’t know if there is any difference. Getting a generic in the same strength should do the same thing.

Extensions can make thinning hair worse, actually.

Biotin is a good solution – try those Hair, Skin and Nails vitamins. My sister uses them. I started to take them because my hair is really, really thinning due to the anti-convulsants I’m on, but biotin actually counteracts those meds, and I ended up having 4 focal seizures. :frowning:

(It sucks, I can’t wear my hair up anymore because it’s so freaking obvious. I’m really, really embarassed by it.)

I’m planning on doing exactly this as soon as my roots are more silver than salt and pepper.

I got it cut yesterday to about 3 inches long on top(shorter on the sides) Unfortunately there’s still some colour so now it looks like I have a Burmese mountain dog on my head. I don’t want to colour it again so maybe I’ll wear a hat until my next cut. Good thing my hair grows fast.

My mom, who has always had thin hair, recommended it to me and it’s really worked. I also started tak ing those hair, skin and nail vitamins. I also don’t wash my hair as often.

Number 2 buzz cut. (I’d do a number 1, but I’d have to do it twice a week.)
I’ve saved quite literally thousands on haircuts.

It fell out, so I cut the rest off. No point getting worried about it.

My mother started coloring her hair when it started to thin noticeably. She swore the color gave her more volume.

Wear a head scarf. My niece lost all her hair in her 20s (some sort of autoimmune thing). The worst was the eyelashes since they actually have a function. Sometimes she wears a wig, but often just a head scarf. That’s what she wore at her wedding and she looked gorgeous.

For men, just live with it. Whatever you do, don’t comb it over. Looks absolutely idiotic.

Did you read the article? “It’s not the hair extensions per se that are bad. It’s like anything—if you get artificial nails done or eyelash extensions—it’s about whether the person who is doing it and you, the person who is getting them, knows how to maintain them.”

A Hat.
