Temp Job! Ended Today! Not Permanent At All!

Pfft. Two days. That’s the shortest one yet.

I tried to keep my hopes from getting up, because I know how these things go. And yes indeed they do go…away.

You may remember I posted a thread that I got a new temp job that might turn permanent. Well, it turns out the temp I was replacing changed his mind about leaving. Seems the economy scared him into taking the permanent job he had refused. So now, he isn’t a temp anymore, and neither am I.

And I would’ve been better than him in that position. I’m not bragging. That job calls for someone who can take a lot of abuse, and boy howdy, that’s something I can do better than anyone!

I thought my last gig had late payments on their bills. Holy shit! This place! Some of their open bills were from 2009! Christ only knows how they kept their vendors selling to them!

The recruiter told me to call back tomorrow. They might have something else. I think they just felt sorry for me. Why not? I know I do.

Life sucks again. For now. :(:(:frowning:

My ‘fave’ temp job had them calling my recruiter after I’d gone home to thank her for sending such an excellent worker - I’d completed the week’s assignment that first day and needn’t bother coming back.

Hope something better comes along for you.

That sucks Cats.

I had a permanent job that I was let go of a month after I started because a former employee came back. Then I got hired there later that year and stayed there four years (about a year longer than I should have).

Oh well, at least your no worse off than you were last week

I had a job offer taken back before too. The guy who was quitting changed his mind.

It happens, and temp jobs are not what they were a few years ago. Just keep on looking and we’ll cross fingers for you. I’ve been doing temp jobs THREE YEARS now.

I guess the economy is getting better for some people, Oh well.

I had this, too. They said they were going to have me for a month, but I finished all of the work in a week. It was data entry, and there was literally nothing else to do - they put me in front of a terminal, and even taking breaks to rest my eyes, I diligently plugged through and finished it quick. It was easy.

No good deed gets unrewarded.

Hope you find something soon, OP.

Exactly - and the one time I took the job a client offered me, I spent the next six months having to turn down other potential permanent jobs that would have all been so much better… Sod’s Law.

ETA - in permanent work now, love my job, love my boss.

I always forget to put that as a requirement when I post positions. It’s very frustrating when we get applicants who can’t take enough abuse as a result.

Fortunately, we’re able to weed out most of those through our interview process.

Sorry to hear about the temp. job ending so quickly. I saw that thread where you were so excited about it. I hope something turns up for you soon, hopefully with that recruiter’s call tomorrow.

At least you are getting assignments. I’m registered with 3 temp agencies and, so far, nothing. I keep calling though. I’m going to wear them down. I need to work. Ugh. This economy sucks.

If it helps, I can offer you an extra cat…

Actually, my user name no longer fits because I’m down to only one cat. But I doubt he’s looking for a roommate. Thanks anyway.

I worked for a company through a temp agency for the better part of two and a half years. I would work about 8 months then get laid off for three before they called me back. I did that three times. I saw at least five people in my department who started after me get hired on permanently, some of whom I trained!

Before I was laid off for the last time in December, I was told that the company was switching temp agencies. I was emailed by the new agency when they saw my resume online. I ignored it because I don’t want to go back, only to be passed over again. When I first started there, there was a guy who was in the same place I ended up; one of the people he trained, who got hired over him, was his younger brother.

One of the legendary stories where I work is how, many years ago, they had a “Temp Appreciation Day” for all of the temporary staff, including a big pizza party for lunch.

The next day they laid off about half of the temp staff.

In a similar vein, my mum was working as a teacher’s aide and the school hosted a morning tea in appreciation of all their TA’s - on a Friday when none of the TA’s were working and no-one told them it was on.

The spread was amazing, apparently.

Also, I was on a temp contract that had expanded from three months to two years or so. My immediate boss wanted me to move on up and sent me to a career development course that lasted a week, when I came back I found a redundancy letter on my desk and my boss fuming.

One of the jobs I had in the break I mentioned above was… special. Just special. Not meant to be a temp job, but, well, you’ll see.

It was a print on demand place, which I thought was cool, until I started working there.

  1. There was no time clock. We didn’t record hours at all. Everyone was salary because the boss’s wife was too lazy to deal with figuring out hours.
  2. They had been through three or four ‘designers’ before me, aside from the two that were working there. One of them said he was just ‘riding the train’ - taking advantage as long as he could.
I was young and these were not did not clue me in.

I put in two week notice at my data entry job, working the last two weeks part time at both places. The Friday after I started working full-time, the two other designers, I, and I think the book assembler went to lunch together.

When we got back the door was locked.

It took some pounding until the owner came out, poked his head out, and said ‘sorry, we’re not doing this anymore. You can pick up your check on Monday.’

This was the Friday before I was going to leave town for the weekend. So I get to drive home, freaking because I now have no job.

I get a call Saturday (I think. It might have been Friday night) that oh, they made a mistake, they hadn’t meant to fire me and would I come back on Monday? I was not so young and stupid as before and said merely, ‘I’ll pick up my check and my stuff Monday.’ ‘Are you sure?’ they ask. Oh, I was sure.

Monday, I find out they didn’t mean to fire the guy either, who did go back. Meaning, they freaked out three people (maybe four) when they meant to get rid of ONE.

I think I was there a month total. I don’t list it on my resume.

I totally feel the pain in this thread.

My last temp job did the same as the OP. Was meant to be a six-month contract. They let me go because I did all the work in less than half the time. As I left, they (the two people I was working for) shook my hand and told me about what a great job I did, and if they needed any more help, I’d be the first they called. Sheesh.

So then I called all the agencies I’m registered with and told them of my availability. Two weeks later, nothing. Ya gotta keep on these guys if you want a temp job.

I’ve hit most of the temp agencies in my county. I might decide to cross the DC line and register with a few more of these guys. I don’t want to commute to DC, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do, eh?
(I had another bad news story in there somewhere, but I forgot what it was. I’ll be back.)

When I was living near Philly, I was working for a temp agency called Gage and they sent me to more or less a sweatshop. I was supposed to work there for 3 days making boxes for Peeps marshmallow treats. ( About a 50, 000 a shift truth be told). After 8 hours of blood-blistering work, they sent me home. I came in the next day and the manager looked at me like I was crazy and said they " didn’t need me anymore" so I got blistered up and exhausted for about 64 dollars

I worked on a temp to permanent job at a Major Computer Company (Dell, but you didn’t hear it here). They brought me in one day and told me they were so impressed with my work that they were SURE I would be hired permanently. In their words, “We are so sure about this, if you have been postponing buying a house because you weren’t sure how long this job will last, you can buy that house now. We’re that sure!”

Two days later they said my position was done and don’t bother coming back.
