Ten Favorite Zevon Songs

I vote that when he passes over, we plan an online wake. We’ll all supply the heartbreak, try to figure out what to do with the motor oil, and quaff a bit of Bombay gin.

And he’ll sleep when he’s dead.

My all-time favorite is Sentimental Hygiene.
I will never forget the first time I heard it, I was driving to some mundane errand, turned on the radio and there was Neil Young’s blistering guitar solo, soon followed by Warren’s voice–I was just blown away. That song just cooks, and of course the lyrics are wicked good.

Other favorites are Frank and Jesse James–actually, that entire album–Seminole Bingo and Sacrificial Lambs, from the newest album.

NO ONE included DETOX MANSION?!?

Saw him at Town Hall in Midtown, late summer 1992. He put on a great show.

Get well soon comrade

uhh… JohnBckWLD, i don’t think he’ll be getting well anytime soon, comrade.

Hmm, nobody’s picking anything from his latest disc, My Ride’s Here. The title track’s fantastic. Maybe death doesn’t ride a pale horse, maybe he’s toolin’ around in a stretched Crown Vic.

Haven’t heard much of his stuff, but I did acquire “I Was In The House When The House Burned Down” after hearing him perform it on David Letterman.

You must have missed my post. One of my absolute favorite songs is Sacrificial Lambs from My Ride’s Here.
For those who have not seen Warren in concert, the phrase “My ride’s here” is what he will often say after his last encore.

I watched part of The Color of Money last week just to laugh, nay cackle, at Tom Cruise’s hair and his ‘Go-ahead-kick-my-ass-I-dare-ya’’ antics while ‘Werewolf of London’ played.

He pulled off the …‘and his hair was perfect’ line with style.

All you guys who are not that familiar with Warren Zevon’s music - Rhino Records is bringing out a ‘Best of’ compilation in October. Or you could pick up the last compilation. Or even better, buy a couple of his individual albums. Honestly, you’ll be glad you did.

Start with “Warren Zevon” or “Excitable Boy”. Boy of them are now ‘value’ priced, and cheap as dirt. And they are his two best albums. Which means they were two of the best American rock albums of the 70’s.

Then pick up “Life’ll Kill Ya”, which I think is slightly better than “My Ride’s Here”.

Hey, here’s a question: Anyone want to rank Warren Zevon’s albums from best to worst (with ‘worst’ still being far better than your average rock album…).

I’d rank them like this:

  1. “Warren Zevon”
  2. “Excitable Boy”
  3. “Sentimental Hygiene”
  4. “Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School”
  5. “Life’ll Kill Ya”
  6. “Stand in the Fire”
  7. “Transverse City”
  8. “The Envoy”
  9. “Mr. Bad Example”
  10. “My Ride’s Here”
  11. “Mutineer”
  12. “Learning to Flinch”
  1. Warren Zevon

  2. Sentimental Hygiene

  3. Mutineer

  4. Life’ll Kill Ya

  5. Excitable Boy

  6. Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School

  7. Tranverse City

  8. Mr. Bad Example

  9. My Ride’s Here

  10. Transverse City

  11. Stand in the Fire

  12. Learning to Flinch

I really have a soft spot for both Mutineer and Sentimental Hygiene. But his first, self-titled album, is a masterpiece. I heard that Rhino has a Zevon collection coming out, but there is nothing about it at the website. I’ve already got the last compilation, theI’ll Sleep When I’m Dead anthology–but obviously would be interested in anything Rhino comes up with.

hee
There is also the album, Hindu Love Gods, that Zevon did with a couple guys from REM.
I always did like his version of Raspberry Beret.

Hindu love gods is great.

Too bad not many people have heard “The Envoy” - it’s never been released on CD. “Charlie’s Medicine” is a great song.

Oh, the Zevon compilation coming out from Rhino is called, “Genius: The Best of Warren Zevon”.

Apt title.
