If we are looking for non-residents who nonetheless are identified with a particular state, how about Tony Bennett for California?

That’s an embarrassment of riches right there. Hats off to PA’s native sons.
Drew Carey? Larry Flynt? Jerry Springer?
For Delaware, it has to be a du Pont. Maybe E.I. du Pont?
Just the other day (and I forget precisely where) I learned that the guy on the Quaker Oats label is just some random dude named Larry. This article supports that idea.
What about Little Bill?
South Dakota could claim Wild Bill Hickok, since he died in Deadwood, but he grew up in Illinois.
Surely it would be Phil Knight or Matt Groening.
I used to work at Quaker Oats. I can confirm that the Quaker Man’s nickname, internal to the company, is, indeed, “Larry”.
The familiar portrait was painted by a well-known commercial artist named Haddon Sundblom (who is more well-known for painting the Coca-Cola Santa Claus pictures). The model for Sundblom’s Quaker Man was allegedly his assistant (whom Wikipedia names as Harold McCauley), but we were always told that the subject’s name (or maybe nickname) was “Larry”, and that’s why the name stuck to the portrait.
Extra cool!
Connecticut: Mark Twain.
Huh? Reznor’s from Pennsylvania.
Let’s see, we also have Gene Kelly, and Mister Rogers?

Thanks for compiling the list, but you left off CT: Twain. (Clemens is at least as representative of Connecticut as Custer is of Montana - both were born elsewhere but made strong marks in those states. Of course, Custer’s mark was a bloodstain…)
And left off everything I did in post 86.
Thanks
Ponce de Leon has about as much in common with Elvis as he does with Honey Nut Cheerios. Did this just turn into a “who is the most famous person from your state?” game?
The only answer for Florida is Hulk Hogan, even if he was billed from Venice Beach. Sidney Poitier and Jim Morrison were born here but spent the bulk of their lives elsewhere.
After Hulk, the only contender is the Backstreet Boys. sigh Or maybe Pat Boone.
