Tennis 2012 Thread

My entirely (and uninformed) opinion is that he has had it too easy- flash cars, living on the Glitter Strip. I’ll wait for the next Rod Laver.

Poor Sloane Stevens, she couldn’t buy a first serve. Good match though…

Andy wins again, but Del Potro is next.

Unless Andy plays very, very well, Tuesday may be his last match.

My heart really really wants Roddick to win.I was seeing the tributes being given to him, and the one from Federer was the best. He said Roddick would always be a Wimbledon Champion in his book. Nice comments, especially considering Federer is the only reason Roddick is not a 3 time Wimbledon Champion. I think Roger is still embarrassed over the 2009 final, he seemed embarrassed enough then

Bad loss for Isner last night. Kohlschreiber played well, but Isner didn’t keep it together mentally. His body language was awful and he lost his shit over a bunch of unfavorable calls. Tipsarevic would’ve been a winnable fourth-round match for him, too. Roddick has been looking good but a win over Del Potro would be an enormous upset. For today’s matches I’m wondering if Klizan can surprise Cilic and if Raonic can possibly hang with Murray. Probably not, but I’d like to see him play up to the occasion at least.

Fed walkover . Fish withdrew…ummm

I stuck with the Isner/Kohlschieber to the bitter end. The anger Isner had should have been channeled elsewhere…like toward the match maybe? Good thing the Umpire Carlos( I bought him a cup of coffee once) kept on top of things and didn’t let the crap go unpunished!

I hope Fish is OK and that this was a precaution and not a recurrence of his heart problems. We probably won’t know for a while. So the quarterfinals in the top half are Federer-Berdych and Cilic-Murray. Klizan had a couple of chances to make his match competitive but didn’t capitalize, and Murray didn’t let Milos Raonic get into that one. Still, the fourth round is a strong result for Raonic.

Speaking of injuries, Nadal confirmed today that he has a torn patella tendon in his left knee and said he’ll need at least two more months to recover. I guess the earlier descriptions of tendinitis and Hoffa’s syndrome were not accurate. If Nadal is out for two more months, he’s skipping Spain’s next Davis Cup match (against the U.S.) and the winter hardcourt swing in Europe. The year-end championships start on November 5, almost exactly two months from now. So the question is whether he will come back just to play that event and a potential Davis Cup final, or shut it down for the rest of the year and come back for the Australian Open warmups in 2013.

Serena blew Hlavackova off the court, and we’re going to get one of those rare doubles partners matches in the quarters- Vinci upset Aggie Radwanska and Sara Errani beat Kerber, so next they’ll play each other for a place in the semifinals. Errani made the French Open final this year, but Vinci had never reached the quarterfinals of a major in singles before. Good for her. It was a good match and she played with a lot of touch and variety, and Radwanska never figured out what to do.

A lot of freaking rain and not a lot of tennis lately. Yesterday David Ferrer made the quarterfinals by beating Gasquet pretty easily, and Azarenka beat out Sam Stosur in a third-set tiebreak. Since almost no one got to play yesterday, today should be great even though today’s matches were all delayed several hours by rain. Bartoli took the first set off Sharapova and had some break points in the second set, and they’ve traded breaks early in the third. Errani beat Vinci in straight sets and Tipsarevic is up a set and a break on Kohlschreiber. A little later Del Potro and Roddick will get back on the court. They will resume from a first-set tiebreak, with Roddick up 1-0 (I think). Djokovic will play Wawrinka later. The guys on the top half of the draw will play their quarterfinal matches later on (Federer-Berdych and Murray-Cilic), so several guys will have to play again tomorrow. The night matches today are Serena-Ivanovic and Federer-Berdych.

Sharapova and Tipsarevic both won, and Djokovic is about to go up two sets and is in cruise control. Roddick won the first-set tiebreak against Del Potro, and they’re on serve early in the second.

Del Potro took the second-set tiebreak and then quickly found another gear. He broke Roddick twice in a row to start the third and won the set 6-2. Roddick held serve to start the fourth set and stay keep the match from becoming a total rout, but this one may be over soon.

Meanwhile Djokovic won in a big hurry. Actually Wawrinka was either hurt or tired of the beating, or both, since he retired with Djokovic up 3-1 in the third. Cilic got an early break and leads Murray 3-0.

:sniff:

And Roddick is finished. I really will miss seeing him in the tournaments.

Jeeze Fed WTF!! You can beat this guy…maybe not:(

Ok ..if it goes the distance..I’ll be up late..

Federer is out. Berdych is through in four sets.

Federer just didn’t have it tonight. He was really misfiring in the first set, and he was pretty far behind before he picked up his game. Berdych was very good and went for everything, and for most of the match it worked. He’ll be back on the court tomorrow against Murray, who did fall behind and then turn it on: he lost the first set to Cilic and was down 1-5 in the second, but won that set in a tiebreak and then won the last two sets 6-2 and 6-0.

Serena was almost untouchable again against Ivanovic. I’m guessing we all think she’ll kill Errani in the semis. Does anyone think the Sharapova/Azarenka winner has a chance in the finals?

Not really. This is Serena’s to lose.

I’ve seen some fantastic women’s matches, including the Bartoli/Sharapova and Stosur/Azarenka matches. Good to see women playing solid tennis vs “who’s going to make the least amount of errors?” tennis.

I just hope that two shriekers don’t make it to the finals. I don’t think my nerves could take it.

Federer looked out of sorts last night, and Berdych was dialed in. The latter is such an unlikeable chap, though. The commentators have said that he’s one of the most disliked players on the tour. I wish that he’d loosen up.

I am hoping to see a new men’s victor this year. Murray winning would be fantastic, but I’d also love, love to see Ferrer win a major title. He’s such a fighter, such a joy to watch that I’d love to see him break through and finally win a major.

Completely missed Roddick’s loss. I’ve never been a great fan of his game. I think having such a phenomenal serve actually handicapped him because it didn’t force him to develop the other areas of his game in time to take on the masters of the game. But, I wish I would have seen that final game against JuanMartin and his NY send-off.

Speaking of the devil, I haven’t seen delPotro return to the laser-focused form he had when he won the US Open a few years back, but it’s good to see him go deep in the draw.

Haven’t seen Djokovic play much at all. But lately he hasn’t been as focused as he was during his dream season.

Oh, and I miss Nadal. The tour isn’t the same without him.

Djokers to lose now. I predict a second title for Djokovic and another final defeat for Murray, Check back next weekend to see how wrong I was.

Good for Berdych. I hope he does well.

We have our first champions of 2012: Elena Makarova (RUS) and Bruno Soares (BRA) won the mixed doubles. Janko Tipsarevic is up a break on David Ferrer in the fifth set, putting him in position to reach his first-ever grand slam semifinal. His only other quarterfinal came at the U.S. Open last year. This is a career year for the tattooed one: he reached a career-high ranking of #8 this spring (he’s one place below that now) and I assume he’s about to improve that.
