Wow, if Tipsarevic makes it, good on him. He’s been playing well and deserves a shot.
Of course, Ferrer also deserves a shot at a major.

I don’t think either of them has a prayer at getting past Djokovic or Del Potro to finals, let alone winning. Ferrer has made three major semis and I’d rather see Tipsarevic get a turn. This is some very good defensive tennis even though it doesn’t have the star power of the upcoming matches. At 4-4, Tipsarevic called a medical timeout to get more treatment for his leg cramps and then saved one break point with an overhead volley and a second on a service winner, then won the game to get to 5-4. This is getting kind of crazy.
I said I figured Tipsarevic would move up in the rankings if he reaches the semis, so I’m trying to work out what might happen.
And Ferrer comes through in a fifth-set tiebreak. He’s back in the semifinals against the winner of Djokovic-Del Potro. Nevermind all that stuff with the rankings- I think Tipsarevic probably would have moved down place even if he won because Berdych is going to move higher. I guess that’s a sure thing now. The other thing I did manage to figure out is that Murray will pass Nadal for the #3 place if he beats Berdych. If not I guess he’ll do the same thing later this fall anyway. Federer and Djokovic will stay 1-2 regardless. Berych and Del Potro are going to be the ones who have a chance to improve their standing depending on what else happens.
I thought I heard Johnny Mac say that Nadal was going to be #5 after this tourney…
I wonder what the Vegas odds are that the men’s final actually occurs on Sunday this year. I hope it does; I haven’t seen a live men’s final in a few years.
I didn’t get to see much of the Djokovic match last night. I was hoping that one would be competitive, but from the little I saw, Del Potro didn’t have many answers. He did hit an amazing winner on a long point in the last game and replays of that shot and his celebration will probably be part of highlight montages for years, but he lost the game and the match. Ah well. Djokovic should cream Ferrer. I hope Murray-Berdych will be more interesting.
Azarenka reaches the final, handing Maria Sharapova her first loss in a three-set match this year. I think she was 12-0 in those matches. (Speaking of which, Federer’s loss to Berdych the other night was his first ever loss in a U.S. Open night match.) Azarenka-Sharapova was a very well fought match but I’m sure most of the headlines are going to be about how ridiculously loud it was. I watched most of it on mute and just turned on the sound for the last few points, and I was just laughing. They’re maybe the two loudest screamers on tour and it just sounded like bloody murder. Like everyone else I’m expecting Serena to blow Errani off the court later.
The Bryans won the men’s doubles this afternoon. That’s a record 12 majors for them, including four in New York.
Sharapova Azerenka match was loud. I saw them both play live in Doha. Loud and annoying at times.
It always surprises me that they aren’t called for hinderence.
An aside: when is Mary Corello going to get the F out of commentating? She Terrible…She must be cheap.
I love Mary Carillo’s commentary! She has such a biting sense of humor.
Crazy day for tennis. Murray won in what was the windiest match I’ve ever seen. They had a tornado touch down very near the tournament, then 2 hours later they were playing tennis. Very, very odd.
Bummed that they’re delaying yet another final til Monday. I have to work so I’ll miss the live match.
It looked to me like the wind was just killing Berdych’s serve toss, and I think Murray’s game is probably better suited for playing in the wind anyway. The commentators were killing the tournament organizers today because the matches were scheduled back to back even though everyone knew the weather was going to get ugly. If they’d played them at the same time it wouldn’t have been great for fans but they could have gotten both matches wrapped up. Instead, Murray gets tomorrow off and the winner of Djokovic-Ferrer will have to play on consecutive days. The USTA already said they were abandoning the concept of playing the semis and finals on consecutive years because nobody seemed to like it anyway, and it’s worked out in pretty much the worst way in its last year.
Nothing going right for Ferrer.
Djokovic goes through and is the favorite for tomorrow.
That’s what I expected to happen if they had finished the match yesterday, but it’s a tough break for Ferrer regardless. Meanwhile Serena doesn’t seem to be playing her best, but she won the first set 6-2. Azarenka leads 3-1 in the second. Vinci and Errani won the women’s doubles.
Azarenka got a second break and wound up taking the set 6-2. CBS says this is the first time since 1995 that the U.S. Open women’s final has gone to a third set. Serena got into big trouble in the first game of the set, but she powered her way out of it with two aces and two unreturnable serves.
Why are they playing on a haunted tennis court? Those blood-chilling ghost noises are very distracting.
Azerenka pulled it together do far, sometimes she goes off the rails.
Huge effort there from Serena, breaking at 15 when Azarenka served for the championship. 5-5 in the third now. One service game left for each woman.
Serena climbs off the mat and wins the third set 7-5! That was riveting stuff. Every time I thought Serena had pulled it together and was about to blow Azarenka off the court, Azarenka held firm and managed to stay in it, but I think she got a bit tight serving for the match and Serena found an opportunity. That was the best women’s final I’ve seen in a long time. And how about this year for Serena? Now she’s won the last two majors and the Olympics. Can she stay hot over the last couple of events and bring this kind of form to Australia?
I was glad she won(Serena) I think she is playing her best tennis this year. Azerenka will have her chances in the future, she is young.
Go Novak! Kick some ugly Scottish ass!
