Gasquet is hungry…what a beautiful backhand.
If you listen carefully, you can hear the loser sobbing in his towel.
That backhand flick by Federer to go 0-30 up in the last game probably belongs in the highlight reel of his career. Federer has only lost one set in ten Wimbledon semi-finals. That has to rank high among the many remarkable stats of his career.
So if Federer wins this, he’ll be the oldest male Grand Slam winner in more than 40 years.
What would you put the percentage odds at?
I’d actually give Federer a slight edge.
55% Federer
45% Djokovic
He’s already the oldest Wimbledon finalist for 40+years.
I have to say, Federer’s performance yesterday was incredible. Murray played so well that he would’ve wiped the floor with anyone else bar Djokovic, but Federer was genius. For those first coming to the sport in last few years and wondering what’s all the fuss about Federer?..Q.E.D.
Serena plays kind of crappy (for her) and still wins. 2nd Serena slam, and one more tournament for the calendar Grand Slam.
The announcers said something to the affect of ‘her highs are way above any other champion, but her lows are so much lower’… but I think this is false. Her ‘highs’ are definitely way above any other champion, but her lows just put her down to the middle of the pack and make it competitive. Bad Serena is still a top 10 or top 20 player – good Serena is the best of all time in a cinch.
That woman is a beast. She won her first grandslam in 1999!
Just how many sportsmen/women are still at the top level of their sport 16 years on.
I think it is quite likely Serena will win the US Open and have the calendar slam.
This means more to her for sure, but every win of hers is so rewarding for me. She’s why I watch. Venus is why I watch. I share this with my niece. They inspired her to make her dad buy her tennis skirts and a new racquet (and of course my brother got them). This is just the best.
Serena and Venus are the reasons I became tennis fans as well.
Is it time to start discussing catching up with Court? I think she could win 3 more. Whether she gets the CYGS or not, she could definitely get 3 more.
I think Serena is capable of playing for 2 or 3 more years. She’s a beast. And, like Federer, younger players are awestruck to be playing against their idol, and that tends to work against the newbie.
Djokovic and Federer are fighting a classic.
Federer remained a class act despite the loss. Djokovic’s little fit just made him look like a jackass.
Hard to believe no one bumped this thread for the US Open.
Serena is being tested by unseeded Bethany Mattek Sands.
Lots of WDs because of the heat this week.
Nice comeback by Serena.
I’m not a huge tennis fan, but i just watched an amazing match, with #32 seed Fabio Fognini coming back from two sets down to beat Rafael Nadal.
According to the commentator, it’s the first time in Nadal’s career that he has lost a match after going up two sets to love.
Some of Fognini’s winners were just insane. He hit two in a row to break Nadal in the second-last game of the final set, and both were absolutely rifled down the line. Great stuff. It’s always nice to see the underdog have a win.
First year since 2004 that Nadal has not won a major. However, the French Open makes up quite a few of those. Had he not won the Australian in 2009, that year would have been the other one.
He spent quite a bit of that injured.
