Tennis 2015

If that match had been the Men’s Final on next Sunday, it would have gone down as the greatest comeback of all time, and one of the greatest matches of all time.

Right before the third set in the Nadal/Fognini match one of the commentators said Nadal has never lost a match in the majors when he was up by two sets. Heh.

Unfortunately I believed him and went off to do something else.

On the women’s side, I sure don’t see anyone who can beat Serena. Maybe Venus, but I’ll bet there’s some mental thing there that just wouldn’t let her, and Serena is obviously in great shape so probably wouldn’t happen anyway.

Andy Murray loses to Kevin Anderson. Anderson through to his first quarterfinal. Good for him.

Outstanding performance by Roberta Vinci to upset Serena Williams in the semi-final today.

Williams looked solid in the opening set, but after that she just didn’t seem to have her usual game, and she made far too many unforced errors. Vinci also played fantastically, especially in the last few games of the final set, where she showed a fabulous combination of power and skill. A couple of her drop shots were amazing.

I’m a bit torn about the result. As someone who doesn’t watch tennis consistently, i don’t have a favorite male or female player, and i usually just root for the underdog. Normally, i’d be really happy about a big upset like this. On the other hand, though, i was also rather hoping that Serena could pull off the calendar-year Grand Slam. That would have been quite something.

Now we have an all-Italian final in the US Open. First time ever.

Nerves got her. She tried so hard taking the pressure off herself and it just really got to her in the end there. Oh well. I’m pretty upset, but there’s always next year. I mean, a second Serena Slam is pretty cool. I wouldn’t be surprised to see her win the YEC. And she probably could go on another big run like this next year. That’s pretty amazing to see whether she wins or loses.

What a great interview Vinci gave to Rinaldi.

Ninja attack. Did not see this coming. But what a great match!

Didn’t see it. What was great about it?

She was just giddy with what she had done

So sad Serena lost. Congrats to Vinci, but I’m really disappointed.

Federer just wiped out Wawrinka. He is looking amazing.

Martina Hingis might just win her second major this year. I’m glad she’s back.

Wawrinka has been looking very distracted lately.

Because someone has been banging his girlfriend?

Never mind. She won both the mixed and regular doubles championships. Cool.

I hope Fed wins it and then does a Sampras and calls it a day.

As for Nadal, its almost Fernando Torresesque.

I used to hope for a final win like that but Fed is still playing so well that I would like to see more. Sampras had slumped to being 17 seed at his final US Open.

And another one in this final as well by all accounts.

Yes, another great final from two great athletes. Outrageously great tennis. You can see what sets them atop the rankings.

Federer is too good a player to resort to gimmicky tactics - it seems desperate on his part. Sure, he needs to upset the rhythm of Djokovic’s game and there are ways to do that. But he switched into the mental mode of “I can’t beat him unless something weird happens” and that is self-defeating.
